I believe I'm reaching a plateau - I went from using a standard 3x10 set combo for the flat bench press to using 5x6 (for 30 total reps). I could not complete 180lbs @ 3x10 but was able to do so quite easily when I switched it up to 5x6. Am I cheating myself out of muscle progression by changing my set/rep combo?

Advance to 185 using 5x6 or stay at 180 until I'm able to knock out 3x10?

I'm 5'9" 165lbs if it helps to answer this question.

Keep it simple.. Lift things up, put them down. Change up your rep scheme from time to time & eat right. Problem fixed..

Why not try 200 for a few weeks, say 3x3. Then go to 185, 5x5. Maybe switch to incline for a few weeks, maybe try dumbells as your first movement. Try everything out, use the proper form. Then come back.

If you can up your weight at 5x6 then why not? Try it out for a couple weeks then go back to the 3x10 and see if you can get your 10 reps at 185.
However if you feel that your plateauing then dont limit the reasoning to your training, try upping your caloric intake for a few weeks then watch your
progress continue.

If you get bored then you could always try out 10 sets of 3. There are no rules.
