View Full Version : BodyPower UK 2013
There may be a thread already for this & I've missed it but...
The BodyPower Expo over here in Birmingham, UK is set for 17th-19th May.
Last year, we had an awesome ABC on the Saturday evening at Emporium gym, who were more than welcoming to the Animal crew, & hopefully we can make it even better this time around.
Myself & my training partner JamesTheMonster are both counting down the minutes (I'll be 2 weeks into a sweet rebound after the UKBFF North West Champs) & we might be bringing along another guy who has just recently started training with us, but is getting over knee surgery.
Who else is in for 2013?
We are planning an Animal Barbell Club event somewhere in Birmingham.
At the BodyPower Expo itself though, we will have a small Universal brand presence (not Animal). In fact, we are considering another Universal Road Trip. For interest and details: http://www.universalusa.com/Community/Forum/Live/Meet-Universal/2013-England-Road-Trip-London-Birmingham

That's a shame about the lack of a dedicated Animal booth, but will be good to see Universal being represented.

ABC should be goin on regardless. Like the Universal Road Trip to Columbus that hit three ABCs, this Road Trip should drop in on an ABC in Birmingham...

Would love to try attend this one what day is it on normally ?
Would love to try attend this one what day is it on normally ?
Fri-Sun, 17th-19th May.
The Friday is typically for trade, not public. Saturday is the main day, it usually centres on the bodybuilding side of things, Sunday usually focuses more on weightlifting/powerlifting/strongman.
I say main day for myself personally, not putting down the other disciplines in any way.

I went for the Saturday last year and loved it only got to spend a few minutes at different stalls I only had the normal Saturday ticket, got a vip ticket this year so hopefully going to get much more time, what day was the abc last year?

It was on the Saturday, at Emporium. Updates & info for this year will be available as & when.
I can't wait, 2 weeks after my next show & so that's 2 weeks of being able to eat some decent grub again!

I am pretty sure the ABC will be on Saturday night again at Emporium. We just have to lock in the rest of the trip, we plan on hitting some other gyms on other nights if you guys want to join us. Most likely Temple and new gym that opened by Simon (formerly of Temple).

Definitely going to be there for the Saturday at Emporium, Depending on various circumstances (crazy-busy at work) I'll be looking to attend the others & drag my man James along for the ride.

Fucking bummed, I was hoping to come over but my college break ends the week BEFORE the expo so I'll probably be busy again that weekend. Even have the funds this year...

Man, that sucks.
Yeah. Oh well, I'll hopefully be in the UK around that time next year and try to make it. If not, surely I'll be over another time and we'll see if I can lift with some of the UK animals!

Glad to see theres gonna be some training going on!! :)
Shame about not having an Animal stand, but agreed - at least there will be a Universal stand and hell, I say go for the road trip!! DO IT!!
And yeah, I'm up for doing a bit of a gym-crawl... Temple would be AWESOME, Emporium was fantastic last year and agreed - The new Ultimate Fitness (Si Fan's gym) does look amazing!! Iron Works might be worth considering too...
Either way, see you guys at the BodyPower!! :)

The 2013 BodyPower will have Universal (not Animal) there, so for the latest news and info, head on over here... http://www.universalusa.com/Community/Forum/Live/2013-England-Road-Trip-London-Birmingham
I'm informed some of the Universal guys will be dropping by Muscleworks Gym in London next tuesday after they've had tea with the queen. It's my home gym, but typically i'm on a late shift til 8pm, but wink wink nudge nudge, i should be ok for that.
I'm down for Birmingham too, would love to meet you all.

It's been a while coming, but here's my review...
The alarm went off at 5.30am & I picked James up just after 6. Off we set, arriving in good time to get at the front of the queue.
The Expo itself, not as good as last year. Fewer freebies being handed out, & the shots of new flavour proteins and new products were also skimpy. An example being on a few stands, we actually had to ask them for a shot, as they stood there with a load of empty glasses. Once asked, they acted like they were going out of their way to mix up a shake & pour it into the empties.
On several stalls, they had mixed the queue (of which there were a LOT) of people looking to get their pictures taken with sponsored athletes with the people who were interested in the products/supplements. Now, when the "sponsored athlete" is a Z-list celebrity from a docu-drama, fly on the wall type TV program, but somehow qualifies as being in good shape on account of the fact that he minces around on the show wearing a string vest that's 3 sizes too small, uses St Tropez tan, lives on sunbeds & waxes his chest, I DO NOT want to be stuck in a queue with a bunch of people who want his autograph.
Not when you've got guys like Branch Warren 10 feet away. Kai Greene walked past us, & I have to say it, he's looking absolutely MASSIVE, even by his own standards. It's early days, but if he maintains that sort of size & brings his conditioning, the Sandow's destination isn't necessarily Phil Heath's bedside table (Hey, I keep my trophies on my bedside table, I assume Phil does the same).
Instead of an Animal booth, this time it was a Universal stall. Manned by G Diesel & Naturalguy, being aided by Josh Halliday, Roman Fritz & David Hoffman.
I bumped into Naturalguy as we made our way around the Expo, he called out to me (by name, not just because I was wearing an Animal shirt) & we embraced. Finally, James & myself found the Universal tent & straight away G was over to greet & embrace us. He then hooked us up with LE Universal shirts, a shaker & samples of the new Shock Therapy flavour - New Jersey Peach Tea. We're a little behind you guys over here, so this was my first chance to try it.
We confirmed times etc for the ABC, & left the guys to it as they were super-busy.
There's only so much Expo you can take, especially with it not being quite as good as last year, & after about 4-5 hours, we decided to get some air & find somewhere to eat some actual food, knowing we'd need some good calories.
Bit of driving around Birmingham, we pulled into a Harvester (a sort of pub/restaurant chain) & ploughed through their complimentry free salad bar, followed by a starter & main with a side dish to go with it.
Once that was digested, we chilled for a bit, tried our LE shirts on for size, James tried on a vest I had agreed to pick up on behalf of one of the cleaners at our gym, & then it was off to Emporium Gym for the ABC.
They looked after us there last year, & this time was exactly the same. I shook hands with Warren the owner & thanked him for having us again, then G & Natural Guy threw us our ABC shirts, an awesome Animal shaker & several samples of Rage & Shock Therapy.
Down went a sample of ST, & then James & myself attempted to match G & Naturalguy as we blitzed through a chest session.
Flat Barbell Press, never a staple in mine & James' workout, was up first & weighing in at aroundabout 74kg, it wasn't long before I was well over my bodyweight for reps. Not that it counted for much in comparison, as a less than 100% fit G was soon putting up just shy of 4 plates for easy reps.
Hammerstrength Incline Press was next, followed by dips with chains Branch-style, & concluding with Cable Crossovers.
We all then gathered for a few pictures outside Emporium under the ABC sign they had put up. Last year it was the classic Black/White logo, this time they had done it in Black/Yellow, I believe to acknowledge Universal. It looked epic.
I've found with the Animal/Universal shirts, the first few washes, the dye comes out in the water. Feeling slightly inspired, I put my new ABC shirt in the sink with the yellow LE Universal shirt, hoping that the yellow dye would come out, & turn the ABC logo yellow as in the sign. The yellow did indeed run a bit, but didn't take on the ABC logo. Not to worry.
Afterwards, James & myself hit Nando's for some chicken with the guys. When it was all over, we bid farewell to our training/dining partners & Iron Family, as they headed back to their hotel & we set off for home.
Due to various nocturnal motorway closures, of which we weren't aware until we set off, we had to take a number of diversions which ended up with us not getting back until 4am. My alarm went off at 7am to head to work.
Totally worth it.
Incidentally, putting this out here to raise awareness..

You definitely maintained the high standard that befits the ABC, inspirational as always.
Latest DOAM entry is of the same standard, can't get enough of that stuff.
I'll continue to search for UK Animal gear, keep hitting dead ends at the minute though.
Any news of the footage that was filmed there?
