I did my first contest back in 1978. Yup, at the tender age of 19 I entered and placed in the AAU Mr Eastern Seaboard ( teen div). Mike Katz was the promoter and Chris Dickerson handed me my first bodybuilding trophy. From that day, until 1995, I competed in numerous bodybuilding and powerlifting contests.
Over the past 18 yrs, I gradually faded away from living like a bodybuilder. I was never into the drug part much , but I used to take pride in my diet and looking muscular.
18 mos ago, I tore my Achilles which led to surgery and I was forced to stop working out for ( an extended period) the first time in my life.
I feel like a big soft marsh mellow lately, and had lost most of drive to workout hard. Being a lifetime bodybuilding fan, I recently watched some Evan Centopani and Animal training videos and started thinking. Ok, so maybe I was 54 and was never going pro, so what ?! For me, the lifestyle and attitude showed in the Animal videos were what drove me to be a bodybuilder in the first place. I was older now and had a dinged up shoulder and lower back. While I loved watching the Animal cage lifting, my days of certain max power lifts were over. I could accept never doing a max deadlift or shoulder press again. What I won't accept is absolute defeat and surrender from hard training and a good diet.
I actually went out and bought 2 containers of Animal Paks yesterday and did a decent shoulder and tricep workout in the evening. I need all the help I can get now from good, no nonsense supplements as I get back into intense bodybuilding now . My new philosophy is : no excuses , do what I can , balls to wall training and consistent diet.
My current focus is on what I CAN do and putting everything into it, as is, no excuses.
