What is everyone's opinion on rest! I know this will vary by intensity and what not but in general for someone training hard 4 days a week, one muscle a day.
Do you think a week every 3-4 months is good or more or less?
I typically seem to take 7 days straight off every 4-6 months.

That sounds pretty good. Some take a week off every two to three months. If you take a break every two to three months, then your break doesn't actually have to be time off. It can involve light training, such as light weights and high reps, or light cardio, mix it up.
Rest is definitely crucial for proper recovery and growth. Every 4 months I try to take off for at least 5-7 days. It gives my muscles, nervous and endocrine systems a break from the constant wear and tear of hittin' the iron on a consistent basis.

I have just turned 47 and for me it seems like I respond better to a week off every 8 to 10 weeks depending how I feel. If I continue to eat right, and that's the key for me, I come back exactly where I left off or even stronger. Don't laugh at this one, but a lot of my breaks seem to coincide with changes in weather.
