View Full Version : If Animal were to make a nutrition bar...

What would it look like? What kind of bar would it be? what would be in it?
For those who have followed the brand over the years, you may know that the company manufactures it's own supplements (unlike most other companies), from Animal Pak to Animal Whey all the way down to the Universal products as well. What few of you may know is that the company can make its own bars too and has for many years.

Universal has a few bars. I've never tried them though. My concern is that they would arrive all melted. Has anyone ever ordered any of the U bars and had a problem?
I use bars at work only, when I can't take an official break. I would definitely be interested. I would want something balanced with protein, carbs and fats. A meal replacement bar, not just a protein bar. Again, ordering a box only to find them all melted to their packaging is a concern. As for flavor, Animal is on point with it's flavor game. You could just go down the Animal Whey flavor offerings and the bars would be amazing. Frosted Cinnamon Bun?!! Are you kidding? How awesome would a Frosted Cinnamon Bun meal replacement bar be???

dear animal, i like my barbells sturdy...and um...usually grey colored. thanks for asking
im a huge fan of the chef irvine bars, the texture is good (not like a hard brick like some bars or laffy taffy like a few others). it has layers to it and a coating. its more enjoyable to eat than most bars out there
the irvine elite ones (smaller and more like quest bars) taste really good to me too despite having the awkward texture

Maybe an Animal MASS bar with lots of carbs, protein and calories.
Obviously, I wouldn´t expect Animal to put any bullshit such as trans fats, sunflower oil, collagen disgused as "protein formula" or high fructose corn syrup in it.
Thinking about this a little more, it would be awesome if we could somehow fuse Animal WHEY, Carbo Plus and maybe a fat source such as MCT, cocnut oil peanut butter into a solid bar.
Maybe using fiber to keep the whole thing together and solid.

What's more important, the quality of ingredients or the macros? In other words, when you eat a bar, do you want to make sure it fits into macros or do you want it to be wholesome and healthy?

I'm gonna have to go with the macro profile. For example- I've thought a lot about trying that "Best Bar Ever" which looks like it's got great ingredients- but I just can't fit that amount of fats anywhere in my diet, so I won't try it...

How often do you actually eat a bar tho ? Is it more like when you are on the run, and you grab something? or is it a daily part of your macros?
I personally eat it only on the run, so id rather something with better ingredients, maybe thats just the culinary in me lol.

Okay fair point- I can't even remember the last time I had a bar. I feel like there's all these new bars/flavors coming out that my gf is all over (she eats like 1 per day as a grad student) and I haven't even thought about one in a while. So maybe I'll have to change my answer...

This right here, and one made for bigger guys not this shit designed for 170lb dudes where I have to eat 2 for a meal :). Some decent carbs, fats and protein and not like the new stuff out here where it is 30 bucks or more for 6 - 12 bars.

I think that's a great point. For those who use bars, do you use them regularly (as in daily) so that the macros are that important? Or, like CC said, something you grab when you can't get a meal in properly?

Main reason I avoid bars is due to macros not fitting.. most bars have a whole day worth of carbs in them. I will use them on weekends that I race, because on those days, macros don't matter. But if there was a bar out that would fit into a lower carb style diet, then I'd be more apt to grab some throughout the day on any occasion.

If that's the case, maybe bars aren't really for lifters like you. I say this because for those who care about macros, everyone has different macros. Therefore, everyone's ideal needs for a bar would be different – and no bar company can make the same bar with multiple macros.
Or am I missing something?

Do you follow a IIFYM approach, as in figuring out certain meals to fit in your total caloric expenditure for the day ? And when you say race, what kind of race ?

Spartan Race mainly.
I try to fit as much fat and protein as I can into the day and keep my carbs to a bare minimum. Everyone is different, so it's tough to say what programs will or won't work for others. But I've trimmed a LOT of fat and gained a lot of muscle doing this. Works well for me.
I think in general, most people who are looking at bars, are looking at something to cut crap out of their diet. In most cases, the crap that they shouldn't be eating is loaded with carbs. So adding more in a bar, would probably kill many "dieter's" macros I would think.
Agree with you tho Rep. Bars just may not be my thing.

I use a bar as a "meal" at work in between breakfast and my actual lunch break. I can run into the locker room and smash it and be back on the floor working in 2 minutes. I work 3-4 days a week and sometimes have one on the run at home.

This. And I usually look for protein content first then worry about calories and fat. Like Mark said, I'd want a big boy bar that has the macros of a small meal. 30-35 grams of protein and then some calories and good fats. I'm not a bodybuilder so I don't worry about too many calories, but just want things balanced out.

You could go a million ways with this--- but look at the protein lines you offer through Animal -- Animal Mass and Animal Whey
I would suggest having a protein bar in line with each
An animal whey bar, would be a lower carb, low sugar, low fat version that provides a good amount of protein for those on the go -- an
overall lower calorie version with good protein content
Then, an Animal Mass bar, that would act more as a gainer, high quality protein, but also healthy fats and a large amount of carbs per bar
2 new product lines to try and please all the different protein bar customers out there

Almond flour
Almond milk
Protein powder
Nuts
All low carb ingredients that would build a solid bar foundation
Then you can go from there.
Make a nut free bar!!! Having a nut allergy makes it impossible for so many of us to find a protein bar!

That would make a bar have 30+ grams of fat tho .. Also, unfortunately, the "ideal" many times isnt feasible as shelf life as well as the bar staying together is an issue.

Exactly.. I rely on bars frequently at work when I just can't stop to have a meal. Something that is filling with 30+ grams of protein would be great. The Fit Crunch line of bars are about the best I have found. Equal or best those.. You'll have a winner.

Even a slice of them kill my belly... I am VERY sensitive to certain sweeteners in the bars (and shakes/powders, even in sugarless gum) along with soy... :/

Protein bars offer a very convient choice to reach caloric And macro intake for many of us so I'm definitely on-board with Animal joining the protein bar game!!
My only concern with the bar being a "meal replacement" would be if it keeps one full for a extended time until the next meal. Most bars don't keep me feelling full. BUT then again, Animal always delivers so I'm expecting nothing but the best.....
Side ponder... now that Animal is getting into the protein bar game; what about a energy drink??? And I'm not talking about "use this instead of Starbucks" I'm talking more like a energy drink that can work like those "1-shot" pre-workouts or cans that some supp companies sell. They include more than just caffeine (some have creatine, BCAAs, etc). Now that Animal has Fury as a complete pre-workout they could potentially turn Rage into a Energy Drink.... just a very random thought
When does this get released. Stop slacking :)

What few of you may know is that the company can make its own bars too and has for many years.
I cannot wait for this! I have a lot people asking about bars! Sick of hearing about Quest!

The new prototype Animal bar "dangerous"? Don't know about that. Delicious, yes. It really tastes like a clean, wholesome, neutral bar to me. I think that's what I like best about the prototypes I've tested. There are so many bars out there and many have a similar taste (or aftertaste). This prototype is unique. It almost like an "un-bar" (a bar that's not a bar).

Worst part of the article "Unfortunately, you’re not going to be seeing Animal’s exciting Animal Snak on shelves anytime soon" :-(

Part of the delay comes from having to juggle multiple projects and prototypes. As some may know, Universal Nutrition manufacturers all of their own supplements. But they also have a bar manufacturing facility as well. That's one of the real reasons why their bars in the past have always tasted different. Many nutrition companies simply rely on huge contract manufacturers to to churn out their bars. So you can imagine why many bars may look or taste the same. Universal Nutrition, on the other hand, looks at bar making as both an art and a science. Anyone can "make" a bar, but not everyone can create a unique bar.

I get it for sure. I had a small chuck at the Arnold. It only intensified my need for these bars.

The bar is awesome! The best part is the digestibility!

Completely agree. The prototypes I've tasted were easy on the palate and even easier on the stomach. I think when you avoid a lot of the processed stuff found in many bars, the bar becomes easier to digest.

Once there's time, I believe manufacturing will crank out some of the latest prototypes for Alpha Testing. That could be a few weeks, but if you are interested, keep checking in.

Tweaked and updated. With luck, based on the feedback from this ATP, the bar will go through another round of tweaks and then maybe a larger ATP.

This is why you have to love Universal. They will not produce something until it goes under exclusive QC and Stability testing. Just goes to ensure they want to be the best and produce the best.

I came off a 12 hour night shift yesterday and saw a package at my door. Inside was the sample of the new Animal Snack Bar. I could not wait and slammed it down immediately. The taste was amazing!!! This is def. a product I hope Animal comes out with in the near future

High digestibility through the use of whole-food oriented ingredients was one of the main goals for the bar.

It's not the "new Animal Snak Bar" but the latest version of the prototype. It's still a work in progress.
