Im Sitting About 180 And Have Been Doing Cardio For Nearly A Year Now About Three Times A Week Out On The Canals. Some Days My Shins Are Killing Me After A Mile And Other Days I Could Go Five Or Six And Not Feel A Thing, What Causes Shin Splints And How Do You Get Rid Of Them.

Geez man I could go on for a while about this.. I have had Shin Splints for over a year and a half now and let me tell you its a bitch..
Shin splints is caused by inflammation of the muscle tissue between the two lower bones of shin.
I've been to sports orthopedists and many trainers and phyical therapists over the matter and spent over 200 bucks on new running shows and inserts to get rid of them while doing cardio for wrestling.
Long story short, Repair of shin splints comes down to two things. rest and correction of your running style. The only way for shin splints to go away is for a break of the activity which is causing them(running in your case) the next step is to figure out if and why your running wrongly and to correct your form. I'll supply links once I find them to help you out..

You need to stretch/strengthen the muscle that runs along the front of your calves...stand on something with your toes hanging over the edge...then put all your weight on one leg and tap that toe on the floor for 15-20 reps...repeat with the other side...do 2-3 sets of this...helped me...
TIP: hold on to something for balance...
i used to get them all the time when i played football. if its just for cardio try cycling for awhile. or you could tape you lower legs, tape around leg on upper calf and tape around leg about halfway down the shin, its helps lend an extra bit of support to the leg but hurts like a bitch whn taking the tape off (if you got hairy legs like me)

Very true! Remember all the people that laughed at some of the Tibia machines when they came out? Train with those and if your lucky..an inch on your gastroc area and no shin splints..

we get alot of people complaining about shin splints, they usually have never run llike we do here. some will ask us about it and we tell them to stretch out the lower legs, and do the toe raises to strengthen the front of the shins. some go on sick call and actually get put on convalescent leave and have to be recycled to a later class.
lessen your distances for a while and stretch/strengthen your shins.

will putting ice on shins after running help at all or does it just come down to correct running form and strengthening the muscle on the front of the calf?

ice helps them go away, so does stretching.

Hey bro, try this exercise. I do them when I train calves.
Sit on a bench lengthwise and let your lower legs hang off the bench on the floor. Take a dumbell and place it on it's end on the floor in front of you. Put a foot on either side of the handle (the tops of your feet will be touching the underside of the top end of the dumbell). Now lift the dumbell off the floor. Now lift your toes towards your knees. Try 2-3 sets of 10 or 15. That will strengthen the front of the lower leg and make them look bigger aswell.
Hope this helps.

Well put. I agree with this fully. I suffered from debilitating shin splints for a few years. I could not run a quarter mile with out falling out...almost literally.
First things first...get professionally fitted for running shoes. Go to a no-shit running store (if you have one), not foot locker or Dicks. Next, use the R.I.C.E. formula as much as you can. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Then stop your cardio workouts and start over. Literally start by walking for a while. Faster, faster, then to a jog. Eventually you can start running again. I did this over a period of a couple months. Stretching is important too. I can never run w/o fully stretching.
This is what worked for me. You may also check on hairline fractures in bone. As I understand they are hard to detect via xray, but they can be found.
I am flat footed..so when I was in the Navy, running was a real bitch cause at the time..you wore the shoes they gave you and it sucked..my shins were in the worst pain and there was nothing I could do about it..still had to run.
Today, I use motion control trainers and I am fine. When I walk on the treadmill at an incline, they will start to burn a bit, but it soon goes away. I just got used to it after all these years and the motion control shoes do help..the extra heel support and all. You may want to invest in special trainers and arch/heels supports to make cardio more comfy for you. Other than that..do different cardio or suck it up...either way..cardio sucks!
good luck!
