Im a pretty small guy... 5 foot 6 and 160 pounds... i guess im strong for my size...

So... Theres always some shape or form of ego in the gym...
Since im a small guy not many of the members in my gym nod at me... i can understand( im a small guy) but after two years of going to the gym i started to lift some heavier weight for my size...EX: 45 pound alternating bicep curls... now all of the sudden Im getting some nods from some of the guys i work out with... like how ya doing bro... i guess its some form of respect cause im at the gym 5 days a week...

Anybody know what Im taking about?

yeah man, it's called paying your dues and earning respect. sadly, this world puts alot of emphasis on looks, weight, height, etc. this is what sets us apart for the rest of the humans that cuz thru life with no ambition or purpose in life. on of my best buds is 5-7 but rings up at 212, and he is freakin ripped. we call him "mini d" , but the only mini he has is body fat and vertical inches.
keep banging it out, run with the real dawgs, piss on the rest, and be buried in a big box with a legacy left behind you.

just keep doing what your doing, those who truley understand this lifestyle will break away from those who are their to talk to the girls and see your there everyday busting your ass. gaining more and more respect.

Yep, it's dues; any time of year, show up and show some iron class and not be an ass. This time of year any new guy is suspect unless he's still goin' well into March. By then, with perseverence, it ain't a resolution anymore; it's a routine; especially if you're showin you know your iron shit by sets and reps; not walk 'n talk. Hell, there's plenty of 5'6" iron monsters around; no reason you can't and won't join the herd.

This is the question you must ask yourself. I demand respect, I'm 5' 5" at 170lb,... I started off at 120lb. But, use to have that feeling when I started,.. there was no respect. But, I've learned overtime that respect can be earned simply by your presence. No one creates your destiny but you,... you walk the path and no one else can help. And once you realize that, you have that respect. When you say your a small guy, remember this,... there is always a bigger fish in the ocean, but I promise you other fish respect the piranha as much as they respect the great white.

earning your way bro.....i'm the same way....I know the nod your talking about.....I don't usually give it out...but I do when I see someone working hard, using good form, and respecting those around them....i don't care if you weigh 150 or 250.....you work your ass off and don't be a dick to those around you....that's respect

Shit man I got up to 180 also back in May but had to have my hernia repaired. And because of family stuff I couldnt until October 6th. I am finally back in to my normal routine and weigh around 165-170.

Just the other day I saw a young kid in the gym... hes been going there for about 6-8 weeks... and you can tell thats he's new(not to put him down)... im not that old, only 18 years young and he's prob like 14-15... he's working hard... i past him and told him to keep up the good work... i scared him a little... that kid was in the same boat i used to be in... ya know... just going to the gym for yourself and workingout until you cant lift anymore...

I hit the weights as hard as a can whenever im at the gym... but a lot of guys still glare( like... why r u here... yr a small guy) it bothers my sometimes... im not there for the guys or the girls at my gym... im there for me... As long as i have my animal card punched out by the end of the day im happy... i might not be the biggest guy around... but im an animal

Sounds like you got a hold on what you're there to accomplish man. Turn this into your personal log, throw down some of your thoughts and ideas for yourself as well as others to read. It helps keep you on track and lets you get some of your ideas across in words.

Nobody else matters in the gym. You can't make them become more focused. Therefore, like you have decided, don't worry about them. Lift for yourself. Atta boy, bro. Keep it up.

Im not the biggest guy either...im the 53 year old...good devinition...and building some nice size...sometimes a few of the bigger guys fun around with me...just last night I was doing dumbell pull overs...and gunting and getting my animal on...one of the trainers...good guy...and a big guy...said to me from across the gym..."hay russ...whats with all the racket over there"...all I could tell him after my set is...."bro...come on over here and get a set in with me...Im only pulling 110 lbs over my friggen head bro...wana jump in with the small old guy?????"....he came over to look at my dumbell...saw what I was doing and said..."bro....you are a fucking animal..110 lbs is huge for a guy your size" I told him that maybe my size is not huge like him...but my mind and will gets me where I need to go. So....what Im saying here is it happens to us all....we are a brotherhood of iron pushers...and we have the animal core in our harts...weather in the gym...or out of the gym...the animal way gives us the power to deal with the everyday shit....so...bring it on...I got a lota more....

Everybody... And I mean EVERYBODY was a puss in the gym on day one.
The guys that stick it out, sweat, work hard, and move the weight with all their might are the warriors. Size don't matter.
We are the animals.

I hate the a--hole's that think they can look down on ANYONE knowing where THEY came from (see sentence #1)

F--k them. Keep working hard brother!

Hey brother, if I were you I would start a log in training, section "your journey". Here you can post your daily workout and a log of your thoughts for the day. I think that combining your training posts with your thoughts are a good idea.

This gives everyone a better look at who you are and how you live your life.

Anyone who judges someone small has honestly missed the point. Do you think any of the pros, or any of these other animals on here were just naturally born with 230+ lbs of muscle? Hell no. Every body had to start somewhere. People who are staring are obviously just so wrapped up in what themselves that they forgot where they come from. I praise the newcomers, the small and weak. They are the future of the sport. That 16 year old kid who can't bench 60 pounds right now might be Mr. Olympia when he's 36. Never judge a book by its cover.

I feel the same way sometimes. I'm getting out of high school in about a month and a half so I can't use our weight room anymore. All my friends are there and we spot each other and I joke around with the big guys and they pick on my but in a fun way. It's really cool there. So, the other day I went to inquire at World's Gym to see how much it was per month for a student (for after I get out of school in May) and I went in and just walking through the door people looked at me like "who's this kid?" It's probably because I'm new on their "turf" but then I was looking around the gym and people gave me the "leave skinny kid" look. I'm going there anyways, because I'm skinny, and I NEED to work out. I'll just keep to myself, be quiet, and try my best to stay out of the big guys' way.

Fuck those huge guys man, fuck em. You're in there to accomplish something completely different from them. Sure they're rackin in some huge numbers, oh well. "You are a bodybuilder not a powerlifter. No one cares if you can bench seven hundred or one thirty five. All that matters is what you look like on stage."-House

Kiwi129
03-03-07, 12:22 pm
I think that's right to an extent... but I do think a bodybuilder should be as strong as he looks. I mean the strength of course comes with the size... but that's just my take on it.

Preston
03-03-07, 5:33 pm
If he's entering a super lightweight competition, I don't suppose they'll be pounding back 500lb bench presses.
