View Full Version : Opening Attempts For A Meet

Trying to pick your opening attempts can be a bit frustrating, everybody has an opinion as to what they think you should do.
The most common way is to pick an opener that you can do in the gym,for whatever lift, for three reps. The idea being that if you can do three, you should certainly be able to get one for an opening attempt.
The average person will attempt the weight for each lift in full gear for that lift generally within the last two weeks before the meet, and then take a week off to rest before the competition. You can always change your attempts based on how you feel on meet day.
The second attempt will usually be a pr(personal best) and then balls out on the third.
If during any of the lifts(squat, bench or dead) you fail to get at least one good attempt you will be disqualified from the rest of the meet.
For me personally I like to push the edge just a bit and stray from the "norm".
I will get somewhere close yo what i think I want to open with and nail it in the gym in order to finish on a high note and step it up on meet day.
Of course, as in my case there may be some injuries to deal with that just have to be worked around, sometimes you just have to roll the dice and see what happens, which is my usual training style anyway.
So, with that said here are my projected openers for my upcoming meet.

SQUAT : 1025

BENCH : 550

DEADLIFT : 605

These numbers are of course subject to change depending on how I feel.
We will just have to wait and see what happens.

Quick question big lifters....

I am 6 weeks out. Take this week for a much needed de-load and the week of the meet for a light de-load that leave 4 weeks. I was going to hit my openers next week. Only question is how do I go about this? Do I hit my best triple weight and see how that feels? If I smoke that maybe adjust up 5-10lbs?

For example my best triple on the bench to date is 250, so I work up to that, makeing sure I can hit it off a pause, and then stop there? should I try for 260?

1st time doing this, what do you guys think?

Well, I may not be the "biggest lifter" or even the most experienced one, but I've been around this sport a long time. Since 250 is your best triple to date; you should try doing short warm ups so you don't expend yourself. maybe do 3-4 warm up weights then go right to 250 and try that for 3 reps. If that feels good, absolutely increase the weight. Only increase as much as you feel you can handle. If it's REALLY easy maybe jump 10-20 lbs. If it's not as easy as hoped, then maybe 5-10 lbs.
Are you going raw or equipped? I can't remember. I know, me personally, I would do a 3 rep set at close to my max, then do a final one lift "meet" lift to make sure I can do it in competition. Don't keep going up in weight for 3 reps, you'll gas yourself and then won't get a true reading of where you're at. I hope that makes sense?
What about the rest of you PL's? Is this accurate or am I way off base?

Sounds spot on to my plans for my meet. Be smart and 100% confident that your openers will go. Always remember, a gym lift will be a lot different than a competition lift, thats why you need to be able to easily triple your opener, then go balls out. I'm no expert though, LOL

LOL...If I have any doubts I will drop the opener to something I KNOW I can smoke...Like 205 on the bench or 315 on deads..LOL....No shame in my game, looking for 6 good attempts...
