View Full Version : Floor Presses
I recently tried floor presses and loved em. I have weak bench press and think of my chest as a lagging bodypart. Who here uses them, and what are the benefits you've seen from them.
It helps you get through that sticking point during your bench..when you hit that rep where you get it up half way and then bam you hit a fuckin brick wall....floor presses are amazing to help you get through that wall!!

I have never done these myself but have heard very good things about them.

As a sport specific exercise for wrestlers and MMA fighters, I think the world of them. Especially done dynamically. Builds great explosive power from the bottom, especially when done with different grips on DBs.

As previously mentioned, they're good for getting through a sticking point, same type of concept as that behind lock-outs (set the safety bars in a cage a few inches above your chest, rest the bar on them, and explode up. Let the bar rest on the safety bars for a quick moment after each rep.) Also mentioned, a great idea for wrestlers. For the wrestlers out there, try applying this concept to squats, it's an awesome addition to your training.
The top of a bench movement is almost all triceps. The floor press is something us powerlifters use to get through a plateau when using bench shirts. Bench shirts make the bar explode from your chest but after that it is all natural, all tricep and that's where floor presses come in. They are basically a tricep exercise and don't involve that much of the chest.

With all due respect man, I'd not presume to call you out Beast, but doing mine today, with strict mind/muscle connection and so concentrating on squeezing the chest at the top, I couldn't do a basic set of flyes when I was done with my floor presses. My chest was shot. Starting from 0 with no momentum or muscle elasticity worked my chest to no end.
JMO.

Beast is correct. Not only does it help with a sticking point, you can also learn how to "grind" the weight out in this position. Normally you should tuck your elbows when coming down to the chest in a bench shirt, but when you press back up you should start to flare your elbows to help get past your sticking point. In the floor press, this technique can be practiced in this range of motion. But in my case the bar touches my chest in the floor press, thank god for my stubby arms, lol. BTW the floor press should take the leg drive out of the lift.

Just watch your shoulders bro, a lot of PL guys out there have lost their shoulders to this one. I myself have also injuried the shoulder doing these. Of course i was ball-sy and did 585 with no wraps other than wrist wraps...don't do that. keep the ego in check and all should be good..LOL. Does not hurt to go all out but make sure your smarter than me about it, elsewise you will be having a rotator problem too.

Is there any difference between floor presses and lockouts in a cage?

king tough call bro. floor presses are better than lock outs on a bench and using squat rack bars. Believe it or not the floor actually supports you more. In the bench your shoulder a able to drift back in applying pressure and that is where the damage is done JMO. This is where i hurt my shoulder, i lurched back to shove the hell out of the weight and my shoulder went, um i dont think so...and ow.
lockouts should be performed properly and with great form...also i think the best training in lockouts is using the bands over rack style, or using 4 boards as such...much better and less stress on the shoulders....JMO again.
Hope that helps, if not hit me with a PM i got plenty of site links for chest training. westside-barbell.com has a great depth in training the good old pecs
