View Full Version : The Bodybuilding Magazine Thread
What mags do you boys and girls read? What mags gets you motivated, best training regimes, most interesting? etc etc
Unfortunately for me...being a woman, there arent any mags that devote themselves to female bodybuilding..most are fitness mags...all fluff and pretty and low-key..which is fine..I look at 'em sometimes...if a couple of my favorite fitness/figure gals are on the cover...but I always lean toward muscle mag, muscular development and flex...muscle media (is that still around, can't get it here), back in the day.
It's sort of a double-edged sword for me..I love the look of female bodybuilders such as Bev Francis and Cory Everson...Ms. Olympia. I also like how some fitness/figure chicks look, like Monica Brant and Davana Medina. I am trying to form something in between for myself.

Powerlifting USA, Oh yeah!!! I had my first cover shot on it back in Sept 06. That was one of the coolest things ever for me!!! But I also enjoy reading MD although I have not been reading it nearly as much as I was. And I found myself nosing through a Flex yesterday when I was doing Cardio. But my mainstay is PL USA, ohh and of course Playboy I read it for the articles :) Hahaha
Wolfy!!!

Discover magazine for me.
What? I'm a science teacher - what'd you expect?
Truthfully, though, when I buy a magazine I want good solid data. What I do not want all the 6-page ads for some trendy superhyped shit that doesn't work. The only fitness-related magazine I read in NSCA's Strength and Conditioning Journal.

Subscribed to Flex...
Buy Muscular Development about every other month and every few months trade my old issuses to a guy for the past few months of Muscle and Fitness.
Works out for both of us.
I used to read Ironman and MuscleMag back in the day.. but they just don't seem to be worth it lately.

My first Muscle & fitness was bout in mar of 85, still read it, I like ironman for the natural trainer slant- yes i know there are still juiced guys in there, it seems to me that muscular development has turned more into a juicers mag. I will buy a flex every now and then. and then I read the Ensign every month also.

FLEX. I've been reading that since it came out in the early 80's (and now subscribe). M&F, Muscle Mag, MD and Ironman. Flex has been fairly consistent in always having that freaky look. MD has gotten 'out there'; I read Bulldog's article in the latest Muscle Mag (but put it back on the shelf). To be honest I put it back because I realized I get better info, articles and unprecedented motivation from animalpak.com. I was like, 'I'd rather put that $5.50 into my Animal supps.'
So, I like FLEX b/c I've been reading it forever. And I'm getting the rest of my fixes from my boys at Animal!

Gotta agree here. Most of those mags are just advertisements with some (usually) not-so-helpful routines and diets slapped in between. If there's an interview with someone I'm interested in, I'll consider picking it up, but otherwise I'd rather just save my money.

IronMan is a unique mag becasue most of the articles have citations at the end that reference actual medical journals. New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, the Lancet etc. The information in the articles regarding nutrition, metabolisim etc are based on actual medical refrences not opinions or personal beliefs. I have seen some of the others use refrences to thier articles but they are usualy not as specific as IronMan. FLEX would be my second choice.

Flex and MD. Peace, G
Menīs Health, because it make me laugh a lot. :) and also i like a Mexican Magazine called "H" (for men) H= Hombre = Man. and its pretty cool with a lot of girls showing tits and stuff. Flex is cool too, but i cant find it every month.
Muscular Development's my choice. I guess if I can get Powerlifting USA over here (I live in Manila) I would read only that, so it's MD for me.
Used to read all the Weider and Kennedy mags but they're so full of ads these days that it's just not worth it anymore.
Generally read Muscle and fitness, its not bad but you get tired of the endless advertisements.

I read FLEX. Love the magazine to death. Ive read cover to cover of every one for 3 years. I get motivated to see what some of the bodybuilders use to look like and what they do now. Like Marcus Ruhl used to be 135 pounds when he was 16 and now we all know what he looks like. Just gets me going

I don't read magazines anymore. All the same useless *tips and tricks* that they cycle every few months.
With forums and knowledgeable guys/girls like this, who needs them? We have the REAL info. Magazines just print a bunch of fluff like "Get Cut in 2 weeks with our *secret recipes* or "Add 2 inches to your arms in 24 hours""
I'd rather spend that money on some good food.

i subscribe to SLAM magazine... a basketball magazine.
But other than that... I enjoy reading Mens Health and Mens Fitness. Of course most of the stuff is really repetitive and I don't really get anything from it. I like reading about the food and recipes. I like reading about the vitamins and stuff like that.

I just go to a book store with coffee and read for an hour or two and if there is a mag I would actually want to read again or there is something in there I want ill buy. I've bought a few MD's and a couple flexs in the last 2 years
ANIMAL should make a mag, I would suscriber to it if it was as real as this website without all the continues over advertising of garbage that we alll just flip through with the quickest that most mags have, correction all mags have.
I'm probably asking to much with the ANIMAL MAG but im also waiting for the rest of the DVD's to come out so im askin askin askin.....thanks again UNIVERSAL/ANIMAL

In the last MD I read there was an article about a trip to MEX and they mentioned MD en espanol, also that the publisher owns and or runs a handful of gyms down there.
Don't subscribe to any bb mag,and it's been years since i picked one up,but i bought an issue of Flex a couple of months ago with Jay on the cover and right in the middle of the mag was a black and white pic of a guy with 3 - 45's hanging from his dip belt, with veins popping out all over the place. I told myself, this is one hardcore dude.Later found out it was Wrath after i logged into animalpak.com and i've been hooked ever since.Awesome
I enjoy Muscle & Fitness. There's always something in there. Muscular Developement is good, Fitness Rx is pretty good, Reps is ok, Flex is decent. Really M&F is the one I read every month. I draw much inspiration from the Animal Journals. They speak it.

I read my kinesiology book and a college level Nutrition book. Screw consumer based magazines. 90% of the articles in there are just promotional ads. If i'm gonna learn to "Get bigger and faster... stronger"(M&F) im gonna learn from talking with others, from my own knowledge, and from good ol hard work. I don't wanna get to the end of an article and read about how if you take this certain supplement the exercises will work better or some shit. The animal pak ads are the only real good advice in there... "Shut the fuck up and train." Enough said.

ok guys, I have grown tired of reading Muscle Tech and Fitness...It is very difficult to get into an article when i have to look at every fucking article about some icelandic doctor that found the latest cure for fixing pussicitis. I would like to know what everyone's opinion is on a great magazine that I can read to get some great ideas on changing up my routines every once in a while.

I recently, a few days ago just bought my first issue of Muscular Development, and i'm not dissapointed, its over 400 pages...given yes that'll mean more ads, but there is lots of good articles, esp. the one on Trey Brewer. check it out.

yea i'm into muscle and fitness. i can say this don't waste your money on reps.

i think they all have their place, once you dig through the bullshit you may find one or two useful tips or ideas or something to spark that light bulb in your head. i read MNF and mens fitness monthly, flex once in a while when something interests me in it. I think i will grab a MD just to check out this Trey Brewer guy.
i really like musclemag. i studied an article about arnolds training and was blown away. there are plenty of great articles, advice, and eating habits. i really like their mag and i have taken many tips from them.
Reps is a good magazine, its not full of supplement adds that crowd the magazine and most of the stuff in the mag is tailored to the bodybuilder who is not using anabolics. Its a "FATFREE" magazine meaning no bullshit...
I always pick up the latest FLEX and Muscle & Fitness, and will probly start getting Muscular Development. Which mags/books do you pick up?
flex and muscular development
Planet Fitness is pretty cool. The only one I found had Chris Mason interveiwing Sgt. Rock.

Muscular Development is the only one that takes enough time to read that I feel like I got my moneys worth. They also have a shit-ton of diverse Q&A with pros that sometimes echoes my own question I would like answered.
Of course, that was before the forvm, which answers all my questions now.
By the way this will probably get moved to the thread "What magazines do you read?"
I read them all once in a while. Only usually for entertainment though. If you're looking to learn though, don't waste your $$...everything you need to know you can find on the net....or here for that matter.

and muscletech could probably print a 100 page magazine just from their ads in MD, Flex and M&F. just too much of that stuff. i've always liked the way that Universal and Animal have marketed themselves in the mags. usually 1 or 2 pages of simple in your face ads that get your attention and make you think "maybe i should look into this." the numerous ads of the same stuff really starts to irritate me. that is why i'm not buying anymore.

First, Iron Man. It just has some more real world training info than others and Jerry Brainum is a genius.
Second, I love Jeff Everson's Planet Muscle. Everson is the funniest guy in the muscle mag business. And, the magazine profiles the world of powerlifting and Strong Man competitions.
I do buy Reps by Robert Kennedy. It is kind of "fluffy" but more real world type of training. It is a step above a fitness magazine.

I thumb through my dad's Men's Health every now and then. The editors contradict themselves so much. In the same issue they talk about the benefits of creatine then they say it will kill you, wtf. I guess a read it on the shitter because they have short blurbs throughout the whole book and not that many articles. I used to pick up MD every once in a while. Dad used to bring home all kinds of muscle magazines. Now I usually just hit up the forvm (learned more here in 2 months than my entire life of reading magazines). Other ones I read are Playboy (I really do read it, sometimes.) and my tech magazines.

Flex is a good magazine. Good motivation to see the pros at their best
Anybody else think ANIMAL should have their own magazine?
i mean the crew (G, Vinny, Pwerfreak, Ant, etc...) could go to the shows/meets and review them
interview the pros and up and commers....just like a regular mag with no muscletech garbage every two pages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know if this post belongs in this section or not. The mods can move it if need be.
I just got my latest edition of FLEX magazine in the mail and you know something? It bored me. I usually skim through it to see what will be coming my way when I read it. I only took real notice of 2 things. #1 was the Universal Nutrition ads. They are a bit different from what they used to be but still they catch the attention and I end up cutting them out of the zine and putting them on my wall. #2 There is an article on Ronnie Coleman. Other that they there isn't much to read in my book.
I am left deciding whether to renew my sub or just let it go. I thought about doing 1 more year and seeing what happens. Really the only reason I even get it know is to see the UN ads, see if any DC stuff gets put in there and maybe an article with another BB. I end up getting all the info I need online anymore. Usually I use FLEX to cut out pics to put on my weightroom wall but it is getting to the point where I could print stuff and do the same thing.

You'll find all you need here..... as for pictures, Just buy the copies you like.

Usually I use FLEX to cut out pics to put on my weightroom wall but it is getting to the point where I could print stuff and do the same thing.
i usually just check them out in the bookstore
if something looks real good ill buy the mag
and i think subscribers get the mags after theyve been in the stores for a bit
I made my mind up that I won't be renewing my sub to FLEX anymore. I have enough 'posters' for my wall. I have my weight training program all down. Only thing I really need is just a few follow up supplements and a round table of people to answer whatever questions I may have OR that someone else may pose that.
I don't think there will be anything new under the sun anymore. I used the zine for posters but also for some articles, like Ronnie Coleman to use as reference for future things.
I learn more things from the net then I would even if I were in a gym.

FLEX and M&F, and the occasional MD or Ironman. Really whatever looks like it has good shit in it that month.
Now, i've been big on Muscle and Fitness, but eventually they get repetitive. I saw House on the cover of Muscular Development the other day and had to pick it up. Glad I did, best fitness magazine i've read in years. Kinda made M&F look like a pretty boy magazine. In MD you could see everyone's stretch marks and the photo shoots actually looked like they were lifting. I'm def. going with MD from now on.

why dont you just go to the gym and train
then go home and eat and rest?!
reading magazines and looking at the ads wont make you grow
Why post on this forum then??? It's all about motivation bro
speaking of Anima/Universal ads though... the one showing the calves that says "We got ya covered...Front to Back" is awesome
it only has 7 words in it and it gave me chills when I first saw it...it made me proud to be a part of a company as great as Animal/Universal

I agree with your choice about FLEX magazine...i think both M&F and FLEX are going downhill....it just seems like the same stuff is in it month after month, like "drink protein pre and post workout" "best times to drink protein" "how much protein"
I'm a huge fan of MD though, their Q&A with all the bodybuilders is really good
I was thumbing through a MD mag awhile back and was kinda of shocked. It seemed like they had quite a few Unnatural Bodybuilding undertones in some of the articles. If anyone else has seen this please let me know, maybe it was just that month and I think it was in March 2007 issue.
Hmmm, good magazines . . . Well I'm keeping my personal knowledge of individuals that turn my stomach out of this because this ain't that place (so I won't be telling you which one I like least). My favorite magazines are PLUSA and Muscle Mag International - Muscle Mag has always been very kind to me and they actually LIKE me (I don't know why, they just do). And PLUSA due to the truly hardcore content (and they've been nice to me, too). I'm a simple creature - if you're nice to me, then I like you. If you ever see me in person, ask me and I'll tell you some dirt - just be sure you can take it. It's like the Matrix, once you go down that rabbit hole, you ain't in Kansas anymore. I don't want to scar any of the youngins. Plus, I like seeing East Coast coverage - to hell with how they do it in California. Unless you're from Cali, then you'll still be alright, just look to the East.

Gotta agree with my Bro' on this one, of course I am a little biased 'cause of the coverage I have received in both mags.
Both have been very nice to me also.
I usually don't read many mags because most are just full of BULLSHIT!

Dude they all have those undertones. I mean they have a section dedicated to new "dirty supps" and a section where you can ask how to make a cycle.

Hey that's fine and I agree with respecting each other. I don't place myself on a pedistal by anymeans. I rarely pick up a mag b/c I get all my info from here. It had been awhile since I looked at a mag and I was just a bit shocked that MD was very open about it.

playboy magazine but maybe thats just me?
i think this thread may anger alot of people here. most of us hate the magazines and their bullshit but i like muscle and fitness. i have one. sombody bought it for me. i like the photos and there is some good info in em.
I would suggest not getting a subscription to any magazine unless you are really particular about one. I got a subscription to M+F and I swear they have the same reoccurring articles every 4 months. All of them have some good info, some current topics, but mainly they repeat.
The number one magazine in my opinion is MD, but it still has a cycle of major articles. I've gone through a lot of magazines, my favorite are M+F and MD.

i understand advertsing and the like, but i can't tolerate all the ad's in MD anymore. there are killer articles and such, but my brain doesn't want to swim thru all the poo to read them. MD needs to figure out that flipping all those ad's DOES NOT make me want to buy their advertisers stuff. but maybe that's just me....FLEX and weider's "exercise and fitness"..(as it seems most of the "muscle has gone from it") usually populate my carry on when i fly.
usually populate my carry on when i fly.
And that's usually the extent of it for me as well. It usually takes me a short flight to flip through the garbage and read the few articles in any of those mags.

i cant stand muscle and fitness myself..they seem to be going after the athletic image now, its all about the abs for them..i like flex, usually no new info, but entertaining i suppose..md has some goodies too

I like M&F to read when I'm in the "reading room". If you take time to look past the generic ab workout articles, you'll find some real good info especially on nutrition. I don't usually look at the cover story because that's usually what they put in to attract the beginner lifters to buy the mag. I do like their nutritional and supplement information.

im a fan of MD i have a sub to it and i also have a sub to FLEX both are good and have great info in them ... im not to into MF because they just kinda seem to be aimed more towards sports and looking pretty where the others are actual bodybuilding magazines
Seems to me anymore that I get most of my info on weightlifting online these days. I have not renewed my FLEX. I just got , what hopes to be my last issues of the zine this week. The last 2 issues were boring in my opinion. In the latest one the only thing that caught my interest was the Dorian article with the guy who reminds me of RVD of ECW lol. I thought that article was way too short. Other than that there was the Animal ad which was nifty.
I looked in Muscular Development just yesterday at books a million, I was blah after it.
I get more from online stuff anymore. Usually magazines for me anymore are for posters or maybe I cut out the wayward article and staple it and put it in a folder.
Now and then I`ll pick up the odd mag, MD, Flex, Musclemag, most are full of adverts, ok I see the need for the adverts to pay for the magazine etc, I just don`t buy them any longer unless there is something in a particular issue I want to read about.
The Beef magazine is one I do get most of the time, local and national news of who is doing what, a lot of people I know who compete are within the pages throughout the year.

no hard feelings to anyone in the mag industry, but i only bought some magazines just to accompany me when im not doing anything.
like while in the toilet. it keeps your brain active while dumping all the stuff you had for lunch.
everyone knows its just marketing strategies and never ending advertisments you can get from magazines these days, i would rather get info from the FORVM and from real bodybuilders than from authors i dont even know.

Anybody wonder how magazines get away with offering injection tips in the pages? That should be considered paraphernalia or something? Anyway...not really sure why I'm posting here, I don't read bodybuilding magazines because their training advice goes against all my philosophies in lifting.

My dad has a subscription to Muscle and Fitness. And I love how on the training programs it has big juiced dudes doing military press w/ 30 lb dumbells making faces and pretending its hard. A lot of the bs I lost 20% bodyfat and gained 50 lbs of muscle in 12 weeks ads too.

Yeah no shit...I swear I saw an add for M*****tech that claimed an ALREADY PRO bodybuilder gained 50lbs of muscle in 16 weeks using their supps. Funniest/most absurd thing I've ever read. That's why we all love the no-bullshit adds by Universal
I read Muscle and Fitness and Muscle Mag. I like the training articles and am always reading to try something new or an alteration. I've tried reading and have bought a few of Muscular development but found it was more, non natural related stuff and mostly advertisements. Anyone else?

I don't read the magazines. I research the endless amounts of sources on the net and read books on the subject. Stuart McRobert, Brooks Kubik, and Mark Rippetoe are some of my favorite authors on weight training. You should check some of their stuff out if you get a chance.
Well I'm not a noob when it comes to lifting but am always looking for new stuff to try and see if it works, ya know. I'm always trying new stuff and if I feel it works, I'll try it for 3-4 weeks or so. If something else comes along, i try that out. I'm always switching stuff up and feel the mags will give me constant things to try out. Ya know?

yeah, it sucks that it costs so much. Its got a good mojo to it though!
Used to be pretty big on Flex magazine but that all changed when i discovered Muscular Development.MD has awesome photo shoots and lots of great information. They also have very good coloumns with Evan,Erik Fankhouser,Branch etc.I find Flex to be very much recycled articles put in different ways.Same old thing about protein, arms, chest etc.

Not bodybuilding per-se, but MILO published my Ironmind is my staple. Great journal for olympic lifting, strongman, and highland games.
BTW - stay away from Muscle & Fiction at all costs, and to some extent Flex. They are oftentimes loaded with BS. Almost entirely owned by Muscletech it seems at times. At least Muscular Development doesn't shy away from the fact that all the freaky pros use heavily.

I subscribe to MD and FLex. I used to like Reps, but it has gotten bland and repetitive. MD always has awesome photo shoots, and finds up and coming bodybuilders. And Md always has articles by house and ox, and the occasional pics.
