Every time I have a MR or protein shake, I almost immediately feel like I'm wasted! I occassionally get this after some meals too.

What I'm thinking is that it's a hit from the carbs that cranks up my blood sugar. I can eat complex carbs like a baked potato with no problem at all, but if I have a shake, I'm fucked up for about 30 minutes.

Any advice? What's happening here?

Are you a diabetic? But seriously you should go see a doctor.

Definitely sounds like some form of insulin spike. Those who are sensitive, say if you load a post workout shake with pure glucose, may experience mild hypoglycemic incidents.

I used to do that, until a buddy and I went food shopping right after a workout. He found me collapsed in an aisle, tearing into energy drinks. Now, I just stick with fructose.

And you wanna stop this because....

No seriously, go see a doctor. I used to date a chick who suffered the same thing: whenever she'd eat a lot of fruit or something, she'd get really light-headed. She was hypoglycemic.

If it's got maltodextrin in it (a cheap terrible idea of a carb for an MPR) then basically you are carb sensitive to avoid getting into too many details. Malto has a GI of well over 100 and should be avoided like the plague any time except pwo for EVERYONE, but even more so for those who do no deal with carbs well. I don't know the rules on posting brands, but post what's in the MPR that you're taking (macros and then ingredients).

Though a doctor might be a good option, most are pretty worthless with things like this. Unless they see a real problem they'll probably virtually blow you off.

Before we go too far, how large are these meals? If you're killing a 1000+ calorie shake then it could be a result of simply too many calories at once. Keep in mind that too many carbs (of any kind) can cause you to crash, too much food (regardless of what kinds it is) can cause a crash, and clearly certain foods can cause the problem more so than others.

There's one definite absolute in the diet game. Everyone's body will respond to different foods differently. They key is to figure out what works for you!

as an ICU tech, I would advise you to talk to a doctor immediately about this--It does sound like a blood sugar issue
while people always talk about wanting to manipulate blood sugar to get gains, your problem sounds serious- IMAGINE PASSING OUT WHEN YOU JUST LOCKED OUT AN IMMENSE BENCHPRESS-GOODBYE IRON FOREVER
remember, untreated/uncontrolled diabetes is going to demolish your body systems and instead of gains you'll just be not only just spinnin' your wheels but sliding downhill
your doc should help you with your specific lifestyle and not just tell you to stop working out and drinking shakes--that is they might say this but do not accept it, it can be controlled with inexpensive medications that compliment your iron lifestyle
