View Full Version : police test
Hey,
I did my POPAT for the Vancouver Police today (police officer physical abilities test) and I passed it with flying colours. It's based on endurance more than strength, and I'd have to say I'm just the opposite; I'd rather lift something heavy than run around. I thought I'd have to change my routine completely upside down and focus more on endurance...but luckily I don't have to.
Anyway, just excited to get that over with so I thought I'd rant about it here. Take care.

Congrats bro. I am thinking about joining the police force when I am older. My dad is retired NYPD and my brother is joining the force in about a year and a half.

The process is pretty long...I'm not sure if it's different in the states than in Canada. I applied to the RCMP in October 2004 and I'm still going through the process...but that's not typical; the RCMP is known to be slow.
The Vancouver Police is a lot faster though.
The process is; you basically wirte an application, pass a written test, then fill out a shit load of paper work on your life, then go through a few interviews (including a polygraph) provide 20 references, write an autobiography of your life, and let an invetigator do a background check on you. Everywhere is different though, but the idea is the same.
All I can say is don't lie about anything in your past. They can let a lot of stuff slide, including drug use....but if you lie to them and they find out (they will find out) then they drop you from the process and you won't be allowed to apply there ever again. They look for integrity; someone with integrity isn't one who's never used drugs...it's the person who is willing to admit it and move past it.
Gentlemen I am a police officer in Kentucky and I went through the academy last year. It's based solely on running, pushups, and situps, pullups etc.. Very Para military. If you are going to do the academy and become an officer, start doing these things, it will only benefit you, especially sense you have to test these exercises in the academy all the time.
Peace

Gents, I'm a member of the Surrey RCMP. You got any questions about the RCMP application process, give me a shout. I'll do what I can to set you right.

i just took a test to become a class one in seaside hieghts nj-- and i actually thought i was ready and would be alright well i wasnt pulled a very shitty mile and than right after we had to do push ups- sit ups- squat thrusts- and in stead of pull ups (they couldnt find a bar) we did a shuttle run. i never would have thought how hard it would be to do push ups after running-- my arms did not want to work- and push ups werent based on your chest-- it was thumb lenght from your nipples any who i thought i bombed my test but i ended up getting an interview and thats this tuesday so im just keepin my fingers crossed- practice the push ups and all after you run if your trying for a test so you can get accilmated to it good luck to your guys who plan on taking the path

This thread just gave me a shot of adrenaline.. i just got back from a party (which i didn't drink at, no alcohol in this body) and the cops basically raided the place. the party was okay and there was probably around 70 people there comin in and out. All those people ran out one single door in the back and being one of the only sober ones there it was funny as hell to watch people try to jump over fence after fence.. It was almost as good as a workout i had so much adrenaline and it was mad fun watchin other people fall on their faces. Got home okay even though like 10 people got pulled over

Surrey RCMP? Right on, I live in Burnaby. I got deffered from the RCMP until September 2007. I'm in the process with the VPD right now, not to be a regular member but to join the traffic authority.

so when you pull us over and we give the excuse for speeding of, "im running late to the gym"
you'll let us go right??? lol
Tell me about it bro... I just finished half of my testing and I've never had to run so much in my life. Good thing it only reaches 118 degrees in phoenix.
Whats up, been a cop since I was 19 (2005) here in Ontario, the fitness testing here also includes a lot of endurance but requires the strength as well. The killer is dragging the 150lb dumby at the very end, not a lot of weight but its a bitch.. If you wanna look it up its called the PREP, I know the RCMP and most police in Ontario use it as their standards. Other than that anyone in decent shape could pass the tests, its sad watching some of the guys and girls who work so hard to get where they are at and when it comes to the physical part they cant do it.
Hey guys,
Keep training. You will need it. Your size and ability to run and get rough is a nessesity in this field. Just remember this. My academy instructors put a poster in our PT room about 5 feet wide and 5 feet long that had a prison inmate in the exercise yard working out and ripped up and over the picture it said " DO YOU THINK THIS MOTHERFUCKER EVER MISSES A WORKOUT?" think about it. That's all the motivation one ever needs in this job.
Stay Safe,

I thought about that too...but I think he started bodybuilding just after he became a police officer, and I can't imagine he started taking steroids from day 1. But I can bet there are some people in his department that are damn suspicious of his roid use.

Hey fellas, I'm a federalli down here in San Antonio. It's great too see some fellow LEO's out here and others pumped up about future plans of puttin on the badge. Congrats to all those guys. My academy was at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in GA...pretty much the same deal as any other police academy...push-ups, sit-ups, agility run, and a 2 mile run. (and a hell of a lot of it!) Any advice I can offer pretty much goes without saying...RUN. It will make your time at any academy that much easier. Good luck!

Anselmo,
Good luck with the VPD! God knows we need all the police we can get here in Vancouver. I just read that report about response times to 911 calls. Heck, I don't mind paying for more taxes to get some more cops on the beat. With the Olympics coming up soon, we all need to chip in and clean this city up!
Keep us posted.
P.S. Where are you lifting at???

Thanks a lot! Right now I'm lifting at the Douglas College gym, but when I'm done school there I'll probably join Fitness World and go to the branch near Lougheed.
