So, what's your oatmeal of choice? Steel cut? Rolled oats? Oat groats? What? How do you prepare it and when do you eat it? Discuss.

I always used rolled, boil it up in the pan for about 10 mins and go.

I had rolled oats this morning; they take longer to prep but I love them too.

Oatmeal stays with me longer, a slow burn energy source. Eat up!

Rolled Oats for me. Sometimes I throw them in the microwave in water for about 2-3 minutes, add a couple of packs of splenda and eat.

Other times I will just add it to my Chocolate Protein shake raw with some Natural Peanut Butter. Reminds me of some good Ol' No Back Cookies. Use water or milk. Yummy!!

I tend to eat my oats for my first meal. If I am still hungry between meals or at night for a sweet treat I will throw down one of the shakes I mentioned above.

I love all my oats..even when dieting and its all bland..I look fowrds to my oats. My all-time favorite way to prepare them is like this:

Baked Oatmeal
2 cups uncooked quick-cooking oats (not the instant packets)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar or splenda's brown sugar (check package for measuring 'cause I think you use less splenda when substituting for sugar).
1/3 cup raisins
1 tbs chopped walnuts or almonds (unsalted)
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 cups fat-free milk
1/2 cup applesauce (can use the cinnamon flavored stuff too)
2 tbs butter, melted (you can omit this)
1 large egg, beaten
Pam (butter flavor is nice)

Preheat oven to 375.
Combine the first 5 ingredients in a medium bowl. Combine the milk, applesauce, butter, and egg. Add milk mixture to oat mixture; stir well. Pour oat mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish coated with butter flavored pam. Bake at 375 for 20 minutes. Serve warm. Awesome with some low sugar jam or preserves, honey, or fresh berries.

Damn toni that sounds good.

Alas i am a microwave oatmeal junkie. When I need my breakfast I need it now.

Also I can tell I had oatmeal in the morning based on my workout. Have a bit more stamina when it comes to gym time (go to the gym in the morning) then i would eating something like dry toast and scrambled egg whites

Toni69
05-18-07, 6:35 pm
yea, me too..I microwave all my oats now too. But you can throw this in the oven while you get ready for work or school, then its done and you sit and it warm and save the rest for later!

Coach's Oats are the best tasting oats I've ever used. You have to order them online, but it's worth it. Definitely more nutritious than rolled oats. Check it out: http://www.coachsoats.com/index.html

Currently: 1 c oats, 2tbsp PB, 2c milk, and 2 scoops of whey two times a day in my mass shakes. They pack a lot of great carbs. When I'm not using RG in the morning my breakfast consists of 10 egg whites and two whole eggs, 2-3c oats, 2c milk, 2 scoops whey and 2tbsp PB.

Rolled, but only since I haven't tried steel cut. I hear they're good, though. Usually just 1.5 cups of oats with water and a bit of splenda, no microwaving or anything. Some days i'll have up to 4 or 5 servings of this, some days just one for breakfast.

Ground up real fine, thrown in a ziploc bag, sittin in the mail for a couple weeks... That's about all the prep they get before they go into a RG shake with some PB...down the hatch! If I run out, then I grab some instant from the chow hall and throw a cup of yogurt in it...

Fuck URep, the cheapest largest fucking container I can find of oats, and I scoup that shit out into a bowl, put some fat free skim milk in there, some splenda, heat it up, and go to town. I eat them right after my workout because they're fast digesting and my bodies craving the energy anyway.

And with breakfast...if I don't have toast, I love oats, they're really good with some sugar free jelly on them..mmmmmmmmmmm delicious!

I love steel cut oats. When you fix 'em, it looks like gruel from some medieval witch's kitchen. Once they're prepared, I pour in a bit of milk and top it off with some honey - just enough for flavor. Vanilla whey protein sprinkled on top is damn good, too.

I love steel-cut. Try cooking them in a crock-pot (also known as a slow cooker. It takes a few hours, but saves time in the long run as you don't have to watch them. Add fruit or maybe a different kind of grain, like wheat berries for different textures.

Like in my previous post, try wheat berries (either hard or soft). You can usually get them at a bulk store and they're cheap! Also try whole grain quinoa if you can find it, that's good stuff and it has a nutty taste to it.

45 mins after my TORRENT pwo, i mix half cup quaker oats with my protein shake, there is a technique to swirlin the shaker bottle whilst drinkin to keep the oats from accumulating at the bottom (gonna get a Magic Bullett to grind those fuckrs to dust).

My question is for brekkie i have 8-12 egg whites, and also a seperate bowl of quaker rolled oats, mixed with milk and shoved in the microwave for 2 mins. I was wondering if its cool to mix a whey protein shake with oats, then microwave or cook on the hob. Would this denature the Whey? Anyone else do this? Or should i jus stick to cold Whey and oats???

I personally prefer Bobs Red Mill Steel Cut Oats. Let me ask you guys a question, how many of you soak your oats overnight before cooking? I have read that its best to soak them over night in warm water and salt as this will remove some harmful acids, I think phytic acid or something like that. Seems I read that it does something bad like cause you not to be able to absorb certain minerals or it depletes them, I'll do some looking around.

What's the deal with steel cut oats? I read someplace someone added them to their shake, so I thought I would give them another try. They take too darn long to cook..so I added them raw to my shake. It sat for a while to absorb the liquid..at least I hoped it would have...it really didnt. I dont like these steel cut oats! LOL..I had to keep adding more water to get the oats just close to my mouth and they still sat at the dam bottom! I finally said screw it and scooped them out with my hands like some cavewoman with that crazed look on her face...as if I was starving...for oats..for carbs! LOL

I will stick with my usual trusty brands of oats...quaker, rolled, quick cooking or the stuff in the health food stores....LOL

I eat them right after my workout because they're fast digesting and my bodies craving the energy anyway.

-Preston[ANIMAL]

I'm pretty sure oats are SLOW digesting... that's the reason people eat them in the morning is cuz they give you a constant supply of energy throughout the day. Anything that's low on the glycemic index is slower digesting and thus better for you.

Anyway... I like a litte flavor in my oats and I would be adding some sort of sweetener, but those packets are so damn sweet. So what I do is take one packet of apple-cinnimon and put it in a 1 cup measuring cup. It fills it up about 1/4 of the way and I put regular rolled oats in the rest. I toss is 1 1/2 cups of boiling water and let it sit for about a minute and its good to go after cooling it with some milk. Works for me...

Yes Porridge is boiled oats (yum), my family is from Scotland and we had porridge for breakfast most days. I still refer to oatmeal as porridge and my kids look at me as if I’m from another world.

Never been a breakfast guy, or a morning person.

But usually make my breakfast as follows..

Protein Shake (about 50 grams of protein)
1 bananna
2 or 3 Quaker Low Fat Oatmeal Bars (19 grams of carbs each)

I know its not the best, but far better then many options out there. And it gets something in my stomach to start the day.

Toni69

yes..its not the plain instant that is an issue for those dieting..its the ones that are flavored...like blueberries and cream, maple and brown sugar...those are around 33g carbs per packet with 13g sugar. Still, not so bad but its also grounded to a finer grain which makes it faster digesting..so best pre or post wo.

If your dieting for a show let's say..you would most likely stay away from the instant stuff and rely more on real oats...otherwise, not really an issue when your on bulk..even a clean bulk.

hope this helps.

ABSOLUTELY! I used regular rolled oats for my breakfast and on high days with other meals throughout the day and I also ate alot of sweet potatoes too. The quick cooking stuff in my post wo shakes. if I was on a low day, I would just use 1/4 cup raw as opposed to a 1/2 raw in my pow shake. So, what's your oatmeal of choice? Steel cut? Rolled oats? Oat groats? What? How do you prepare it and when do you eat it? Discuss.

over the winter...offseason, i like to make meatloaf oatmeal

1lb lean ground beef
1lb ground pork
3 cups of oatmeal
1 jar salsa
1 diced celery stick

mix all together and cook in the over for 45 min.

makes a few serving....

I am from the south so grits are king here and I do not like gruel. So I had to come up with a way to eat oatmeal and now I crave it after every workout. I eat rolled oats.
Pop five whole eggs in a skillet. Let them turn white a little. Then dump a cup of oats in with the eggs and bust the yolks and mix all of that together. Let it cook until it is done enough for you. Now thats how to eat oatmeal. Throw in some ketchup and scarf'em down.

well I just got a magic bullet for christmas(I already love it) and I'm quite sure that I'm now going to be just dumping my oats into it as part of a breakfast shake at least 75% of the time that I eat them now. This morning I threw in some oats, skim milk, natty PB, scoop of chocolate casein, scoop of vanilla whey and it was great.

Something I noticed tho is that since they were uncooked, the same amount of oats that I normally eat didn't feel nearly as filling so I just drank some extra milk and water.

I always eat the standard Quaker oatmeal. It is rare that I eat the instant oatmeal, only because the instant oatmeal has alot more sodium.

I eat my oatmeal every morning. I make it in the microwave. I do 9-10 large spoons of oats and mix that with skim milk. Pop it in for 3:30 and then add grained almonds and walnuts and a fruit of choice, usually sliced strawberries or grapes.

This is a staple for my diet, great to have after I workout too! I usually have this with about 6 or so egg whites with slender american cheese.

2 scoops of Real Gains stir with a little water

2 tablespoons of JIF ( My favorite) melt in microwave for 1 minute until liquid and mix with the RG

Stir in 2 cups of whole grain oats and 1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup

Stir well and place in mircowave for about 2-3 minutes until all water disolves.

Stir well again and let stand for a couple minutes. This is a meal that will hold you when on the go and have to go a long period before eating. Plus it tastes like dessert.

Alternatively you could buy large flake rolled oats and put them in a Tupperware (or similar) container, pour boiling water over them, put the lid on, and in 5 min you have tasty oats: Flavor them as you want. As stated earlier in this thread I like mine with instant hazelnut coffee.

My everyday oatmeal breakfast:

Big bowl of oatmeal

Cinnamon
Apple sauce (no sugar added)

I take a big protein shake w/ milk (0,1 % fat) on the side.

Most of use have seen the recipe for a protein pancake and said "f*ck that, I don't have the time or attention span." Gentleman, behold the 5 minute answer...

Eggs (currently 7 whites for me) + 3/4 cup Quick Oats + Water (for consistency) + Blender = Pancake Batter!!!

It's not Hungry Jack, but this makes 1 good sized pancake that does the job very well. Add some sugar free syrup and you're golden. I prepare at night, then add more water if necessary in the morning.

If you're not cutting, I'd suggest 4 whole eggs instead of 7 whites, and 1 full cup of oats, and a spoon of peanut butter. Maybe some cinnamon too. Glorious.

MR.TeachFreak

You can cook them or put them in a shake depending on your preference. Me personally I cook them in the microwave and eat them plain with breakfast. Most quick oats, 1-minute oats, etc. you usually just add water and nuke it for about 2 minutes or so depending on whether you want them a bit more soupy or thicker. You can also cook them stove top if you want. I know others on here put oats in their shakes so they can tell you better how to do that.

House cookie

the way I make the House cookie is:
1/2 cup oats, between 1/4-1/2 cup coffee (water works), 5 packets artificial sweetener

mix in a microwave safe bowl, pat it down so it will cook like a cookie

microwave for 3:10, use a fork to flip the "cookie" over and cook for another :25 seconds

you might have to adjust time accordingly, I burned a lot of cookies before getting it right.
