A few weeks ago, I left my middle school science teaching position to go to the high school classroom. I'll be teaching Biology Honors 1st semester, and Earth/Space Honors 2nd. I got hooked up with the athletic director and he gave me the head football coach's number. We talked and I'm now an assistant in the best football program in the nation. Really... they've been National Champs for 2 years in a row and Florida state champs for the past 3 years.

Not too shabby... I've coached high school baseball before; this will be my first time coaching football. I don't think I could be in a better position than I am now.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the support. I'm already impressed with the dedication a lot of these kids have. They show up to the optional practices and lifting sessions and push harder than most teenagers I've seen.

hows the coaching going? The weight room looks sick!
Thats awesome its good to know that the kids are putting in the time. I need to get my team to spend more time in the weights room!! Any ideas on how?? I'm seriously tempted to just show them the animal website and tell them to sort it out!

congrats bro....and a quick question for ya, how's teaching bio/earth science...ive got a B.S. in environmental bio and always wondered how teaching it would be...even though if i ever pursued it I'd have to take a major pay cut... i always thought the coaching/teaching gig would be pretty bad ass

Wow... I started this thread over a year ago. After football was over last year, I was the assistant coach for weightlifting as well. I'm now in the thick of my 2nd year of coaching football. After going undefeated last year with JV and 10-2 with Varsity, I'm very proud to be with this team. The Varsity team just returned from West Virginia this afternoon after beating Pittsburg Central Catholic (2007 PA state champs and ranked in the top 15 high school football programs in the nation) by a score of 35-0 in the Friends of Coal Prep Classic. Both the JV and Varsity squads are undergoing some rebuilding due to guys moving up to Varsity and seniors graduating. We still have a lot of potential to do great things, though.

It's time consuming. I'm putting in 13 hour days and not getting paid enough. I coach for the love of the game. I teach because I can coach. I look forward to the bell ringing at the end of the day because I honestly feel I make more of a difference on the field than I do in the classroom.
