Which beginner (Powerlifting) Strength Program could you recommend for Football(Running Back)?
My goals are Strength, mass, speed and explosiveness
I suggest Juggernaut 2.0. Seems really focused on explosive athletes. Thats just my opinion though. Doesn't hurt to read the eBook.
We will all die we will be in a lot of pain. It's coming our way. It's inedible. It's part of life. While in the mean time you might as well be a fucking savage and live your life the way you wanna live and might as well put your best effort and your best foot forward and train like a motherfucker. - Mark Bell
I`ve read the book. It`s great. But i think more for intermediates.
I`m a beginner with no gains and i think i should start with Basics.
What do you think?
It's an older book but specifically for football. Bill Starr in case you weren't aware was Mark Rippetoe's mentor. Rippetoe's book Starting Strength is a great book but since you specifically asked about training for Football, I'd go with The Strongest Shall Survive. It runs about $29 new on Amazon.
When I played, we ran a program called Bigger Faster Stronger, was heavy focused on squats and periodization, but broke it down real easy. I'd recommend in addition to any lifting that you do, dont forget about movement. Look up the dot drill, it's a great agility addition for RBs- when I coached football I made all my players do this, but especially skilled positions and LBs. I'd also suggest looking into plyometrics.
do you have a strength coach? Every program I have ever played for had a strength and conditioning coach that would individualize a program by position and would also give extra work if asked.
Man I don't know how your school is...my HS coaches were total clowns when it came to strength training. Thought they knew what they were doing, but as I got older and spent more time lifting and reading up, I realized those dudes were clueless. Regardless...if your #1 goal right now is to improve your ability as a RB, I wouldn't look at powerlifting routines. While the raw strength of the big 3 lifts will transfer somewhat to on the field performance, pl'ing is about improving in those 3 lifts...period.
I would for sure look around online for some routines that are not only football specific, but also position specific. See if you can find info that's been put out there by successful college and pro strength trainers...guys who make a living doing that shit. While many people don't like to share too much info since their training knowledge does make them a living, there's some guys who will share a good deal of what they know for the masses.
That said, I feel like the best thing you can do is to work on explosive movements. Power cleans will transfer to the field much more than deadlifts will, even though deads will up your raw strength and put on mass. Squats are great for your legs as well, but incorporate a lot of sled/prowler work into your training as well. Hell, put a car into neutral in a parking lot and push it around for a bit. Do lots of hiit style cardio...I remember our coaches would make us run laps all the time, but that's the wrong approach for football, imo. Rarely are you ever moving for more than 5-6 seconds at a time...maybe 10, so train to go all out for short bursts, with 10-20 second rest periods.
Btw, what's your current age/height/weight? Not that it matters, just curious where you're starting from...
