Though most here may already know, Derek "Apex" Lunsford, newly minted IFBB Pro and competitor at the next Mr. O in Las Vegas next month, is a new member of our brotherhood. Talk about a meteoric rise that caught some by surprise. In a short span of two weeks, he not only won his pro card at the USAs (an extremely difficult achievement), but a couple of weeks later, he earned a trip to the O by winning the Tampa Pro. To say the kid has potential would be a pretty strong understatement. Here at Animal, we didn't sign Derek because of what we thought he'd achieve on the stage–though it will likely be prodigious. We didn't sign him because he might become a household name in the sport of bodybuilding–though the likelihood is great. We partnered with Derek because he's a kid with a rare combination of characteristics we value here–humility, a strong work ethic, a powerful desire to always improve and never sit still, and a positive attitude that builds bridges. We knew that when we first talked to him. That's why we signed him before he turned pro. We knew what we were getting. Derek will be a tremendous competitor and though he only just turned 24, he will no doubt be a great ambassador for the sport, one who will help grow the larger lifting community as well–something very important to us. As the newest and youngest face of Animal, welcome to the family. We are looking forward to a long relationship.
