Wait, what?! That's definitely insane. That kid doesn't know what he's talking about.
Mind boggling that people can make a claim or comment on the matter who have NEVER competed, have virtually no experience, and only been lifting for a few months to a year. It is definitely a growing in today's society. Very disturbing.
I remember when I got started in this game. You were lucky if a pro took a pic with you at a show much less gave you advice. These young guns these days open that trap so quick and to the pros at that. Man with the resources we have today like the forum, social media etc, fellas take the advice as best you can and soak it up. Guys like Tuttle and Rex know their stuff and you just might learn something for free, ill take all the advice I can get. I have been 19 years plus at this and still don't know shit.... Thanks for helping us out guys!

100%! The younger generation think they KNOW everything and have no respect for others. NONE! I would never do half of what I see to older more experienced population when I was young. NEVER. I mean there are some good ones of course but overall no respect and a huge delusional outlook on life. That would be like me telling the guy coming to fix my electrical panel he is doing it wrong. AHAHH shit, what do I know about electric work he is the professional
Yep, back then you would have had your ass handed to you.... The good ole days. Chris, you gonna be at the Arnold this year? Its getting closer!

Yup. I HATE to sound like that old guy, but man I think social media has caused a lot of this. Everyone can be Insta-famous with zero knowledge.
"Ask yourself this: if everyone else is training once per week, what are you doing that's so different that you would expect to get better results than anybody else? You might have good genetics, be tough enough and disciplined enough to train hard... but so are a lot of people." - BOSS
"I think I must be overtraining"... no, you're just a pussy - Machine

I feel like Animal has been better at this than anyone else, period. I'm sure it's part of how they search for athletes because it seems all of them have been super helpful and down to earth. Most are on here and post a lot and offer help/advice. I mean look over the years we've had the House, Coronato, Ox, Wrath, Machine, Higa, Ben Seath, and now the newer crowd of Rex, Chris, Derek, Jay, Boss, etc who are on here commenting and posting all the time. Just talking shop with whoever takes the time to post, all for free.
That's how I ended up trying Animal products to begin with. I was deploying and took the time to send Fankhouser a message on Myspace (I know, holy shit... wtf is Myspace?) and he actually responded and reached out months later to see how Iraq was. Made me think "Hmm, I should check out the company sponsoring this guy. He is down to earth enough to respond, let's see who's backing him" and I've been here ever since. Some good pros around here

Oh dude 100%! I see insta-famous people giving WRONG diet and training advise all the time. No wonder people are getting misinformed. Even though information is at our finger tips there is too much of it and 80% is false.

Oh Universal / Animal are SUPER particular with who they sponsor. Def a more rigorous procedure than one would think. They want people who have integrity and are well spoken.
Yes Sir, will be there everyday! Hopefully will be asked back for another year with the crew!

YES. Has me wanting to pull out my hair. This boggles my mind sometimes. Especially the respect aspect. I would say the sense of entitlement is crazy. Well put on the electrical example. I've travelled and been in gyms to see some guy squatting a rough 405 but to depth and not bad technique, and some younger dude, usually geekier but wearing all of the best gear and brand new this and that "lifestyle brand" clothes, who squats 135 with perfect technique and never ever tries to go heavier ...because...that might actually stimulate a training response... he goes up to the other kid who just finished squatted and proceeds to venture off into giving his unsolicited "expert" advice that he learned off youtube.
How do you expect to run with the wolves at night if you spend all day stuntin with the puppies?

Yeah isn't that nuts? I mean 99% of the time I do not even give advice unless someone asks for it. How many times in your life to you listen to people who come up out of the blue and say something when you did not ask them? LIke never. I think it could be mental illness.
As someone who is part of this new generation, I do agree with all of you. I've seen way too many guys my age and younger talk too much shit to older, more experienced lifters. Now I personally don't think that age is a huge factor when it comes to respect, and that's just my opinion. I've also seen way too many grown ass men be overly disrespectful and do just as much stupid shit as younger guys sometimes.
Which brings me to my point that regardless of age, race, sex, training experience, progress etc... respect is earned and at least in the gym I feel that work ethic is the number one thing. Some people simply are more/less gifted... Some are wiser or dumber than their years... But if you work your ass off for something day in and day out regardless of how far along they are I respect them more than the gifted freak who bullshits their entire session. I was fortunate to be brought up lifting with older guys who would smack me around a bit if I got out of line when it was gym time and I stuck around because their knowledge was valuable to me. Most guys just read articles and websites, therefore they have no reason to be respectful to the more experienced guys... what could they possibly learn from some mean looking meathead at the gym that the internet/instagram didn't teach them?

You have some valid points. Some of what we are referring to is comparing generations. Major lack of respect overall in the younger generation compared to when I was that age. Not all of course and of course there is some asshole older man too. Exceptions to every rule. It does sound like you have had a different upbringing than a lot of people your age and I applaud that. Def a breath of fresh air.

lmfao
To that end, I've got a world of respect for those in the gym who have a humble, strictly business mentality. I don't mean being overly serious, just those getting it done with no excess or unnecessary flamboyance.
I cannot stand these linguini strap wearing, nipple showing zit heads in the gym walking around with their lats spread at all times, acting like they just got back from the Olympia. Then they go do standing presses with 15s.
