      Training with fresh tattoo ink

Trying to gather people’s thought on how soon after a new tattoo is it fine to lift? I’ve heard 6 weeks, I’ve heard it doesn’t matter and go the next day. Just curious other peope’s thinking on it. If it matters, I’ll be doing a full sleeve from shoulder (cover up) down to wrist. So my whole shoulder & arm.

I would say a few days but with swelling and all it may just depend on how you heal. I heal quick so I only wait a few days. Keep some tattoo goo with you.

Yeah I usually will carry goo with me and wash it 3x a day. I'll be gone the following Fri-Sun, so just debating on if I should go ahead and take the week off from upper body and just focus on legs/cardio and pick back up where I was. Just curious what the other guys/gals in here did after fresh ink

Thanks man. And yup, I’m excited. My wife and I decided that would be our Christmas gifts this year, new tattoos. Except she didn’t know I wanted a sleeve lol.

You'll be fine. I've gone a day or two after getting some ink and it was never an issue. Now if you got, say, a whole back piece done and then wanted to go into the gym a day later and do a heavy bench, with your back pressed against the bench, then I'd say maybe avoid that for a bit. Or if you got something upper-back-ish, maybe not squat and rest a bar across it for a bit. But something on the arm/shoulder area wouldn't be an issue.

I got a half sleeve done last year and was in the gym I think 2 days after. Just waited for the swelling to go down a bit, and then went in. Healed fine and had no issues at all. Was nervous because in the past I’ve waited as much as 2 weeks but actually felt good to get a little blood flowing

One of my tattoos I got a few years ago starts at my shoulder and goes across my collar bone and half way across the back. That really sucked when it came to squats/bench for a week or so lol

Full sleeve is a lot of work. Hope it is being broken into a couple sessions. The wrist will swell up big time as well as the inner arm. I would give it one week and be cautious of any lifts that will cause major rubbing ( ex- back tattoo and hitting bench) Once the healing starts and swelling goes down...you should be good to go. Not to mention, a tattoo that size will require touch ups automatically so no worries with a little rub here or there. Just my thoughts on it.

Yeah I know I'll end up getting some touch up work once it heals up. It should be mostly 1 session, about 7 hours worth. I'm with the guy (same one who's done my other 6) literally open-close and he thinks he'll be able to get it all done. We'll see what happens lol.

I have two sleeves and my whole back done... I understand the pains of sitting for long hours. I am at the age where I don't sit for longer than 3 hours anymore. Best of luck with the new ink.

A couple of years ago I got almost the entire right side of my ribs done and that took a little over 6 hours. Fun times ha

      This one sounds reasonable.
Obviously, some of the other ones do as well. I´m only quoting this one.

i go one or two days after i get it done. i just try to make sure it doesn't rub on anything and definitely doesn't make contact with any equipment in the gym. i also try not to sweat because that isn't good for the healing process. and there is no way you are gonna get your full sleeve done in 7 hours. my full forearm alone was 7-8 hours

Yeah, big body parts take time. I am sure whatever that full sleeve is...it will look good. I agree big time on not letting the fresh tattoo touch the gym equipment for a number of reasons but one question....how do you go to the gym and not sweat? Just busting your balls a bit but all in fun.

Ha, I had this same reaction when I read that line. I walk into the gym and start sweating. That is most likely due to the fact that I need to do some more cardio. I am starting a half sleeve on my left arm next week. It's going to be the outer portion of the arm, to start. So it'll be the shoulder down to the elbow area. It also happens to be the 2 week of a 5 week meet prep too. So we will see how that goes. Being that its just shoulder to elbow and outer arm, and split up into multiple sessions, I see no issue training the next day or two. I'll just make sure it's covered up. No machine or piece of equipment is hitting that area anyway.

i go in wearing a tank so that i'm not overheating from a sweatshirt, and i take slightly longer breaks between sets. i don't sweat all that much to begin with so it isn't as difficult for me to prevent

There are quite a few people who tattoo in my gym and almost everyone there has...many...I got mine, was my entire shoulder, front of delt, up trap, rear delt, down to middle of arm and I took off the next day and lifted the following. They said to make sure it's covered with like a shirt or something while lifting, if it's in an area that can't be covered then tape gauze on it, then rest of day let air out, moisturize at night, wrapped in saran wrap first two nights...that's it

The people that say 6 weeks are the same that don't lift in the first place. That advice goes in one ear and out the other.
