Not as effective but some of us have to use what we have available. As long as we are making it work for us.
Beast is absolutely right Bean if you have a choice however when life gives you lemons you make lemonade even if you dont like that tart shit! Thanks for your perspective!
as I get older and have more issues with knees and such, I find myself using the smith a bit more. I work it into workouts here and there. Typically for incline press movements and squats since I have torn my Patella Tendon. Helps me keep better positioning. I think of it like this, if you are using a machine or any equipment and getting results, muscle activation or anything positive from it then use it to your advantage. There is nothing wrong with using a certain type of equipment if it works for you!
I'm 62 buddy and now in order for me to continue I must abandon some of my old friends. It's hard saying good bye. That's why I value everyone's input here good, bad or indifferent. Family and friends don't know or understand what this means to us.So I look to my fellow brother's in Iron for advice.
LOL! It's not an attempt to be macho. It is simply the cold hard truth! If you want serious gains then you have to use Barbells and Dumbbells for basic movements.

I must admit, in the past I have done these movements on a Smith Machine! LOL!
I’ll only do seated overhead press on the smith machine. The military station at my gym has the barbell so far behind your head that racking and unracking wrecks your shoulders. Really nobody ever uses it unless they’re using super light weight. Sometimes it just is what it is...
