Does anyone have any experience with a drastic change in caloric expenditure?
I recently retired from elite level water polo in which I was training twice daily (usually 5-6h/day with weights and lots of swimming). My 6000-6500 cals diet consisted of 1.5-2g protein/lb bodyweight with the rest coming from carbs (minimal fat). I am now weight training quite seriously to fill the void of competition and am currently on my second DC training blast. The 3 lifting sessions per week, along with 3-4 cardio sessions, is a massive change in activity.
Nutrition has been challenging for me. I am still consuming 4000-4500 cals at 1.5-2g protein/lb with a more balanced carb/fat ratio. I am skeptical that this is the right approach to take given the years of very high calories and hours upon hours of cardio. Any experts on nutrition care to weigh in on the body's ability to shift from a cardio-dominant sport to maximal muscle gain?

Thank you to anyone who can offer some advice.
