      Military Press

Seated or standing, how low do you lower the bar. I have worked to get my ROM to the collar on my t-shirt. All presses are basically off my collar bone. However I see all these videos, some are pro guys, only lowering the bar to their chin. That’s 3-4 inch difference. Pressing off my collar bone isn’t going to mess up my shoulders? You can use alot more weight if you don’t touch your t-shirt so maybe that’s all I’m seeing. I just figure you have to touch on bench so why would press be different? I want that power at the bottom. Thoughts?

In contests they generally say the bar has to go below your chin. In the gym I just go as low as my shoulders allow. On the lighter sets it’s a little shorter range of motion but on the heavier sets it usually sinks a little deeper. I guess it just depends how tight everything is for me.

I usually just break 45 degrees while seated. It probably is not the greatest ROM but it works for me and I see growth in the shoulders as well as feel it where I want to feel it.

I do them standing with a barbell to the front and rear. Don't have that little seat thing that would allow me to do it seated, plus I need to acquire DB's =)

Behind the head is definitely a shorter range of motion. I never feel real comfortable doing them behind the head

They're the best!! The old school lifters and legends only did them behind the head as they knew it was harder but worked the entire shoulder girdle thoroughly. Kaz, Coan, Pudianowski, etc all did tons of behind the head work. If you can remember, for the longest time in Strongman competitions all movements were behind the head! They still a have few but have fallen out of fashion.

My grip is much closer for regular Overheads; however, I use my Bench Press grip for behind the heads and stop at the knot on the back of my head and press back up. At that point my elbows have made 90 degree angles and the muscles fry out rather nicely =)

It's simply a good way to add variation and or enhance your anterior delt pressing movements.
