I came to realize how important hydration was during my high school wrestling days. Suffice it to say the experience was nothing less than traumatic.LOL!! Some folks just need to learn the hard way.
Got that right! Most of all the lessons I have learned was the hard way. Esp when young. Young and dumb and we think we know it all! HAHHA

I once stopped drinking for a show for 3 days straight. We probably felt similar...

I only had to truly cut once in wrestling. But my little guys (103,112, 119) suffered. I remember sleeping over at our 103 pounders house before a big duel to make sure he didn't drink throughout the night. I heard now that they do hydration tests...much smarter and safer
I work with teens and sell ideas that they might not want to buy into because they think they know better or it goes against the lifestyle they want to live. I use examples from my life and others lives that I know...suffering will happen no matter what because there are always new variables that we didn't experience but if they can learn from our mistakes to minimize some of those mistakes or struggles, then I think we are doing our job. They don't need to feel the same pain we felt...they will feel their own variation of pain that they can teach the next generation.

Funny you mention that Bean. I was a natural '55 but cut to '38 every week. I remember getting excused from classes so I could run around the pool with my rubbers on just to make weight. Crazy right? Most of my buddies had pictures of girl friends and "Da ladies" from playboy in there lockers I had one of Dan Gable with his head all bandaged up taken when he was kicking the shit out of everyone at the Olympics. Total fucking bad ass!!

Yeah, I remember those days. I was always supporting my team, like I said, I only had to truly cut once. Showed up 10 over for a championship duel and had an hour to cut. Made it and we won CIF ( California's division break down) that year. I had pictures of the Brands brothers training. I recently gave one of my clients that was in wrestling my shoes from my wrestling career. It was time to pass the torch. Come to find out he sold them to another kid later in the season. Made me laugh but I truly had no need for them anymore.
I didn’t wrestle, but I was on the rowing crew in high school. My partner and I qualified for a big race in our double in Philadelphia. When we got there we found out they changed the weight class on us and had to lose 5 lbs real quick. We wrapped and taped trash bags around our whole bodies, put on all the clothes we brought and sat in a mini van with the heat on for an hour. We made weight and guzzled water. Died half way down the course and finished last.

The stupid shit we did and survived huh CD. Didn't we expect that to affect our performance? I was on my way to having a great season when it caught up with me. I carried a cup with me all day long to spit in and when there was no more spit I sucked on a lemon. I took absolutely no fluids in until I tipped the scales at 138. After weigh in it was a regular smorgasbord until I got on the mat. Where's that freakin' tilapia?? LOL!! senior moment.

We did it how our coaches told us because that's how they did it...it worked but not efficient at all.

It took a certain kind of person that enjoyed wrestling. I wrestled year round. Folk, freestyle, Greco... but I think it truly helped me understand discipline and it helped on the football field.
After some of the videos I’ve seen, I equate it to eating rats out of garbage cans and never touch it. Only if my survival depended on it. We are fortunate to live in a country where we have plenty of alternative choices. It’s usually cod filets for me. Living in Michigan perch, walleye and white fish are also good choices.

Tilapia certainly wouldn't be my first choice now but before all this data came out I had already eaten a shit load of it. Naturally I was concerned after hearing all the horrific details how these poor little bastards are farmed. It seems after speaking to someone who actually has somewhat of a clue on the matter that tilapia depending where it comes from has varying degrees of contamination. Recent studies have indicated that Tilapia from the U.S. and Canada get a little better report card than tilapia from Asia. Besides a lot of restaurants sell tilapia in the guise of red snapper. I know right? Brings new meaning to the term "BUYER BEWARE"!

Yeah I guess you are right. I just enjoyed being aggressively physical and trying to defeat the "enemy" so to speak. I remember we would after practice or on parties wrestle out of weight class until someone tapped out. Acted like to total neanderthals.
