Evan:

As an avid lifter as well as a college business student, I was curious as to how hands on you are regarding the business sides of universal and animal pak. Do they come to you for ad ideas, campaigns, product ideas, etc.? I can't imagine such a great opportunity to mesh one's passion with their education.

Hope all is well, you're a huge inspiration to all of us.

One of the things the best things about Universal that really stands out in comparison to other companies is that it's family owned and operated. I don't need to say how BIG of a company Universal is or the recognition that it has worldwide because what I feel is most significant is the fact that they remain a blue collar operation. It's like comparing Planet Fitness to a privately owned and operated harcore bodybuilding/powerlifting gym or better yet, like comparing Olive Garden to a resturant owned and operated by full looded Italians. Don't like the food at Olive Garden? Put a comment in the suggestion box. Don't like the food at the other resturant? Let em know and the cook is gonna get a talking to. Better yet, if you work at the Olive Garden and have an idea about how something can be improved who are you gonna tell? Your manager? He doesn't own the place and besides, no one wants to hear it. That's why they don't hire people who are overqualified.

So to answer your question; yes. I think that because Universal is and has been family owned and operated for so many years and is one of the oldest sports nutrition companies still going strong, it hasn't fallen into the "bigheadedness" that has ultimately lead to the demise of other companies. When a person or a company begins to achieve success and then start to feel like they know everything and stop listening to those around them, they fail. Aside from the athletes that Universal uses as part of their marketing, almsot everyone in the corporate office has some type of tie to the sport. A lot of the guys working there are actively competing or have done so in the past in either bodybuilding or powerlifting or both. Between the sponsored athletes, the people in the office, and feedback from consumers, Universal is the type of company to consider things from ALL angles. Just as the marketting is not about superstars, neither is the work that goes on behind the scene. If an athlete is good, he's good. If an idea is good, it's good. Simple as that. Egos get checked at the door.

To me, Omega is essential and if it came down to EAA/BCAA stak or EAA Nitro, I'd opt for the Nitro. Thanks man, I'm feeling better. Good luck and keep me posted.

Check bro! I will keep on with the Nitro, and will order Omega on my next purchase, which will be soon seeing that Nitro only have 21 servings... I was using Torrent after WO but for some reason it makes me bloated, and I dnt need more attention to that area right now. So post WO, willl be a serving of EAA Nitro with a scoop of Storm (since I got almost 2 tubs left from my first order!)

Glad that you are feeling better bro!

Wow, that's a great analogy. I definitely agree that there's a lot of benefit to staying blue collar and keeping a company, as well as their atheletes, grounded even after they've experienced so much success.

Sounds like a great company to work for, I look forward to learning more. Once again, thanks so much.

Evan, it's Mike.. I had a dream last night that you were in.. We were at the Olympia, 2011 of course, and you were competing.. And I saw you back stage by yourself, and we just started talking.. You asked me if I wanted to train legs with you, and I said sure.. Because you were so depleted and dried out, you weren't as strong, and were only squatting 225.. Really weird.. Then I told one of my buddies after my workout that I was squatting more than you.. You overheard me, and just started staring me down.. Then I walked by you and wished you luck and you were real short with me and gave me that stare down look again.. I was gunna go back and ask you some questions about Matt, but you were starting to freak me out.. But yeh lol, that was it..

Hey Evan you think beginners should just stick to heavy compound movements with an isolation movement? Or no isolation movements and just compound movements? Whats your take on that?

Man call up Robbie and make a video or two on MD!

There's nothing wrong with including isolation movements but I think the basic compounds movements should serve as the foundation and make up a good 75% of training. The basic free weight movements should be MASTERED by everyone.

deadlifts are my favorite exercise. on the bar i allways put my left hand facing away and right hand towards me. even though i do lat exercises could this constant way of deadlifting make one side of my lats bigger than the other?

Hey Evan, I just want to give you an update on training and nutrition and see what you think..
69" - 190lbs - 10%.. Just got out of the military, bulk season for the next 3-5 years :-).. Heres how my diet and supplement is NOW, and I will make adjustments as I see fit depending on what my body is doing..
M1 - 4 Eggs, 3pc Whole Grain Bread, 8oz Cranberry Juice, 1 scoop MyoFusion
M2&3 - 7oz Tuna, 1.5cups rice, 1 tsp Olive Oil
M4&5 - 7oz Ground Turkey, 1 Medium Potato
Supplements..
Animal Pak - W/m1
Animal Omega - W/m1
Animal Flex - W/m5
Animal Nitro - 1 pre w/o, 1 post w/o
EAA Nitro - 1 Scoop post w/o
Creatine - 5g post w/o
Glutamine - 10g post w/o
ZMA - before bed

I already have a new idea for my intra and post workout supplements after I'm done with the EAA Nitro and Animal Nitro.. I'm gunna go with Intra Aid, and Torrent.. I'm not too big yet, and with my diet and supplementation squared away, I think I can get by with a little more workout frequency.. So here is my Split..
D1 - Back
D2 - Shoulders Bis Calves
D3 - Off
D4 - Legs
D5 - Chest Tris Abs
D6 - Off
D7 - Repeat

Volume is moderate, and reps are moderate to high since I'm just getting back into it. I'd like to condition my muscles, and take extensive consideration into injury prevention.. So I'm in no rush for heavy weight.. Cardio, I do cardio twice a week.. Medium intensity, maybe 15 minutes or so..

Right now I feel good with everything.. Mood is good, pumps are good, body isn't aching.. So I'm going to stay on this path until I see fit.. Is there anything you see or anything you'd like to add as far as criticism?

And your journey is sounding amazing.. I'm doing everything I can to make sure I get out there to see you at the Arnold.. Dream come true..

Thanks man. As for your dillema, the decision to compete is a personal one. Drawing upon my past experience, as a teen there were a lot of people telling me the same stuff you're hearing. And just like you, I didn't feel like I was where I wanted to be and didn't feel ready to get on stage. It's entirely up to you man. I'm not saying that you should be close-minded but a lot of people say a lot of shit and it's not always what's right for you. You be the one to decide.

For powerlifting where the objective is to move the most amount of weight possible vs bodybuilding where you want to use weight as a means to developing a physique that is big and as symmetrical as possible I think the grip should be different. If you hope to develop a symmetrical back how can you do it with an assymetrical grip? Doesn't make sense to me. My advice is to use an overhand grip with both hands.

Tough lighting and the way you're posing makes it tough to see that much but it certainly looks pretty damn thick! Tough to tell width based on that photo but thickness looks good.

Hey man-

Everything looks very solid. Honestly, I can't think of anything I'd change. I like the split; plenty of rest days in there. Te diet looks solid; lots of whole food. At some point, you may find the need to up the amount of protein per meal but like you said, wait until you feel your body needs it. You covered all the bases with the supps too. Really good man. Just stay tuned in to your body and let me know if you've got any questions along the way.

1. Thanks man! Things are going well. 2. Some things are not open for public discussion but at the same time, I do respect my fans. So I try to find a happy medium. 3. Nitro should be taken on an empty stomach to get the benefit of it's fast and efficient absorption (free form aminos). Taking it with food eliminates that benefit.

Big Man!

What's going on? How's prep coming along? Are you working with Oscar again this year, if so, how is that going and what are you main areas of target?

I'm back from my Italy trip. I didn't have much time to really view Italy because I was doing things with the show out there and they kept me pretty occupied. The last night I was able to get to the city and by the time I got there, all shops were closed down. I did see the market and it's huge! Unfortunately, I didnt get the chance to go in. I hope to make it back next year and really view the sites.

Damn it! I KNEW you wouldn't make it to the market! I just had a feeling. I'm bummed about that. When you have seen something and you want to describe it but know words won't do it justice you want people to see it so bad! Oh well, next time. You know, to this day I still have recurring dreams that I'm in Italy and am ready to go home but forgot to run to the market to grab some of the things I love and I'm racing to get there but never do and end up frustrated in my dream. Oh well.

I'll see what I can do man. As for the arms, doing hammers will lengthen the bicep muscle and standar curls should help thicken them. When you say wider do you mean thicker or longer?

I had read in many of your posts that you take a lot of aminos.
so, please, give me an insight about this:
immediatly before training
1 Nitro pack
intra
2 Nitro packs + 20-30g of Waxymaize + Maltodextrin
post
2 Nitro packs + 20g of Waxymaize

or do you think that one pack before, one pack intra and another pack after is enough?
this doubt is really killing me!

thanks as always, professor!

Offseason I feel the aminos are best when saved for PWO. I like 3-4 paks right after training with a carb drink such as EAA Nitro. Pre-contest/when dietting I like the aminos before and during training and or cardio. I may take a pak before, 2 paks during a pak after.

First off, your the man.. Secondly, couple of questions..

1-Why do you hate plastic so much?
2-How much water do you drink a day? And do you drink out of a gallon or do you carry a stainless steel water bottle around?
3-Do you devote any days to "full body stretching" routines? A day devoted to just long static stretches?

As always, thank you for your time.. And I must say, it is great to be out of the military and back on track with my diet and lifting.. PEACE E!

i have been lifting 2yrs. this last yr. i have been taking it very seriously.... i am just a regular guy who can't stop puhing his limits.... so hears my question monday and fridays i do full-body super-setting back w/ chest, bi's tri's and shoulders, then a full on leg workout......wensdays i do cardio and abs......is that keeping me from gaining mass.....

thanx for your time and thanx for setting the pace......

Yes. That is a ridiculous training split. Start doing less. Pick one large bodypart and maybe add a small bodypart to train with it. For example, a normal day of training might be chest and biceps or back and triceps etc etc. NO ONE should be able to have an all out leg training session at the end of a full body workout.

When should you train with a weight lifting belt? When trying to up your weight in an exercise like dead lifts how far should you try to push yourself before you start using a belt? I've never trained with one before but have thought about trying it out soon.

You're asking someone who never uses one so I don't know if I'm the best guy to ask. I was given a belt when I first started training and used it a few times when squatting and deadlifting and hated it. I felt it got in my way and led to me pushing out more on my stomach. Have not used one since. So my advice would be to try one and see if you feel it helps. How do you know when you need one? There's no law saying that anyone NEEDS or will even benefit from using a belt. Borrow one from friend before you buy one.

Yo OX,
To my sincere joy(SARCASM) the day my wife got back from Hawaii after three wks of being with her sister i got sick with a fever for three days. That happened this week. totally misse out on Thanksgiving.

How would you advise someone getting back in the gym after being sick with a fever for three days. The diet obviously sucked but i got tons of sleep but I'm sure taht went more to sickness recovery. Should I start out light or go as normal.

Thanks

Hahahaha...3 weeks?! Nice little vacation huh? Don't be coy with me...you missed her so much you made yourself sick! Hahaha...anyways, I'd go according to how you feel. Be sure to get enough food in you first and be sure that you're properly rested and hydrated. But once you do got all that squared away, I'd say go for it in the gym.

That's a good question. I always had my father. Granted, he knew nothing about bodybuilding but learning from him how to deal with situations and how to go after the things I want in life, had everything to do with bodybuilding. In the sport itself, when I was 23, my buddy Ron who was a competitor talked me into competing and he helped me with my last week. But everything up untitl then I pretty much figured out on my own. I read, I though about shit, I tried different things; in the end, I did what made sense to me. Since then, I've had some good adice and some bad advice but I learned from both.

Ox, been a while since I had access to a computer and haven't seen any pics or vids of you in a while. But I just saw the Chest/bis vid on MD....dude, you have put on some serious size. And you seem to be in great condition for 14(?) weeks out. Great work, the progress you make from show to show is something to be proud of.

Also, when you took the time to explain the gratitude toward your fans, that was also very admirable. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and have been a die-hard Cleveland Cavaliers fan as far back as I can remember, through the terrible years and the more recent playoff runs. After seeing how Lebron conducts himself in public in downtown Cleveland, how he treated the people he would meet in public, and then the way in which he left our team.... its incredibly refreshing to see an athlete (yourself) who is the complete opposite.

So many videos I watch are just about lifting, while great to watch, I really enjoyed your food prep section. It was interesting to see the differences between this one and the one you did a couple years ago. Most people that I talked to who watched it said the same thing, "I have to add more veggies in our diet". So thanks for the wake-up call.

It's so great to see how gratetful you are to your fans, and I know you say that some of the things you have is all because of your fans and the fans of the sport, but a lot of us out here ( even those of us who don't know you on a personal level ) owe a lot of what we have to athletes such as yourself and the sport as a whole.

Your a true inspiration man, and we'll all be around to watch and support your growth and success in the sport for a long time to come. (Even if it is from a computer screen) lol!

Your looking sick man, good luck for the AC and the rest of your prep.

Much appreciated man. I see myself every day so progress isn't always easy to see so thanks! I sincerely appreciate my fans. I've seen it happen in everything from politics to athletics. People forget who they work for. Politicians are put in office to work toward doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Instead, the American people are screwed time and time again...corruption and scandals are common and accountability is non-existent. In sports, athletes act like they are above their fans or that their fans are a hinderance to them. I can certainly understand the passion and drive and focus it takes to attempt to be the best and it's easy to get wrapped up in that and end up focusing entirely on yourself! Not a good look. It's great to win and fans definitely want to see that but nobody likes an asshole. Balance is important and it's best to maintain a good attitude and remember who you work for. Thanks again man.

Sup big ox. I wanted to ask you about taking Cuts during a bulk. Would this hurt my mass gains? I am doing a 22 week bulk, so the 3 week cycle of Cuts wouldn't be too long. Its been a few looong nights since the newborn, and alot of fastfood and other shit. I dont want to get too fat because that just makes it harder come prep time. My other thoughts are it would help keep bf% in check and would dry some water out, so gains would be better seen. Any advice would help. Thanks and have fun at the Arnold! Better show than the Olympia

You could do that. If your calories are high enough you should continue to gain. If it were me, I'd save the cuts for prep time and continue your bulk but eat well and throw in some cardio...there's no reason you should get a positive response from that.

I find that works well for me but don't know if it would optimal for you. I know that when I'm done with quads, I'm burnt and hamstrong training after that would be half-ass. If you feel the same way then I say split it up. You'll have to combine your arm/delt training in order to make it fit in a weekly split.

The diet is mainly clean. If I need some shit I eat it. Here's my offseason diet:

meal 1: 6 whole eggs, 8 oz red meat, 50g of carbs from cream of rice

meal 2: 12 oz fluke, 2 cups white rice, 1 tbsp olive oil

meal 3: same as 2

meal 4: 10 oz chicken, 1 cup veggies, 8 oz white potato

meal 5: same as 4

Firstly Evan, congratulations to all your success and for being an inspirational role model. Your no BS attitude in your "a day in the life" video, realism on training, life and modest humble honesty is something that the sport lacks. You're a normal "dude", and many can relate to you, the family around you, and moving out, including myself. Congrats again bro and KICK ASS AT THE AC, I plan to be there rooting for you !!!

Question: I'm starting to prep for my first contest. 40 yrs old, 5ft 7in, 210 lbs, 8% bodyfat (good proportions and symmetry), 14 weeks out. I've read much about carb cycing (low, medium, high carb days) vs carb depletion (ketosis, with moderate EFAs and high sodium until about 3 weeks out). I'd like to have your intelligent opinion on your pre-contest dieting strategy. And of course, I am already keeping detailed track of protein, carbs, EFAs, calories and water intake.

You should have seen how GLUED I was to your video hoping you'd talk about your pre-contest strategy ! We actually cook very similarly (fish varies between sole + tilapia, chicken, red meat, lots of veggies with some fruit). I just cook for a full 7 days (bought a freezer also, to stock up on the big food sales and visit to the butcher !)

Thanks again for being inspirational and the main "gym warrior" for answers !!

Damn man I really appreciate all that. As for your pre-contest strategy, it should correlate with what you do in the offseason. Seeing as you're already at 8%, I'd say there's no need to go keto. I'd simply look at how mnay calories you were consuming offseason and replace any junk food with clean food but the same number of calories. I wouldn't even drop calories off the bat. Instead, I'd implement cardio and let that creat the caloric deficit. I'd start there. Keep me posted.

Big Ox,

I'm not sure if you are able to help me.

My mom's just got back from the hospital. She felt a terrible pain in her lower back. She couldn't even walk, or move rightly.
Well... the doctor told her that in her last vertebra she had lost a fluid, liquid (I don't know the name), and that had happened because of her carrying excess weight.
without this fluid, liquid, you can't move!

so, the following idea came to my mind as soon as she told me that:
"I'm only 22 years old, and I do squats and lifting heavy weights. Am I screwed?"
Can you help me?
Please, do not tell me to go back to that doctor! Brazilians have different approaches that I don't agree on them.

hi even i also have a question:
how much weight do you loose within the whole time of your contest prep and do you prefer high intesnity cardio or low intensity cardio when your in your preparation. Also do you train heavy or keep it high volume for the most part?

i lost 45 pounds of water weight and fat weight and maintained all my strength even gained strength in some muscle groups.well all of them.

Depends on how heavy I start and how much I need to lose. I've dropped 30 and I've dropped 70. I like moderate intensity cardio. I prefer high intensity training. congrats. Sounds like you had a perfect prep.

Much appreciated if you help me.

I wouldn't worry. Just don't do anything stupid and you'll stay injury free.

Also a great example to everyone that they should do what they feel is right and not listening to all the critics. Corporate is workin' on an exclusive interview with Ox following his win at the 2011 Flex Pro which will be posted on Animalpak.com this afternoon. Here's a bit from it...

Animal: At what point did you start believing you could actually win this show?
Ox: After seeing Dexter for the first time backstage on Saturday morning. He’s a 3-time Arnold champion and an Olympia winner. Though I’ve watched him compete, I’ve never stood beside him. At pre-judging, we were set to go on stage together. As I was standing next to him, I was amazed by his incredible musculature and how he could pack on so much muscle on his small frame. But at the same time, I felt bigger than him. This gave me a real confidence boost. I didn’t feel as filled in as Dexter, or as complete as him, but I felt like I could hang with him because of my size advantage.

Hey Evan,

Before I ask my question, I want to say good job on your most recent win at the Flex Pro and best of luck at the Arnold Classic.

For some time now, I feel my abs are not symmetrical (then again, maybe I just don't know what they really should look like) But my upper abs (closest to the ribcage) seem to roll upwards and outwards, while the middle and lower abs slide inward. Now I'm not aiming for a six pack, but I would like to see some symmetry if there should be any at all. What sort of ab exercises do you do or recommend to target the areas that are lacking?

OX,

Quick background: I lift as a hobby. I try and Eat, Sleep and Train as a bodybuilder. And no, I'm not on gear. I recently got a physical and everything is AOK but I am borderline low kidney function. The reason for that is my kidneys aren't filtering out all the creatinine. I believe the allowable range is between .8-1.3 . I'm at 1.44. How do you take care of your kidney function with the massive amount of meat (chicken, beef, fish) you may eat and the supplementation of creatine? As of now I upped my water intake, a gallon, and I'm laying off the creatine supps.
Check up is in a month.
Thanks,

My name's Billy, I been in the gym training hard for 3 good solid years and learning everything I can, I've done the midnight training sessions, the real early in the morning training sessions, split routines, shock therapy, I've pretty much done it all besides competing because I want to know what its going to take to gain at least 20-30 pounds of lean muscle mass before i start thinking about competing in these shows. I weigh 160 pounds right now of almost pure muscle, very little fat on my body, I'm 5'7", i'm 20 years old. I wanna know man, what's the best weigh to get to my goal which is to be at least 190 pounds if not more, standing at 5'7" and also be cut up like I am now. My diet's pretty clean but I tend to not stay on the same diet every week, but I don't eat fast food at all, once every 2 months, if that. I consider myself dedicated, i'm a mean cuss when i'm not training, lets put it that way and if i haven't taken my vitamins or drank any protein on a certain day i also become very irritated, i just would like to know from an expert like you what would be the best diet plan to reach my 20-30 pounds of lean muscle mass goal?

1. I like fluke/flounder/sole; all low fat white fish...easy to digest and low occurence of mercury. I like wild salmon when I need the extra fat.

2. I weigh them. White potato s about 5g/oz. Same for rice, measure with a measuring cup.

I don;t usually have a problem but then again I don't usually use creatine. Not sure of that makes any difference or not. Start by cleaning up your diet. Then, I'd focus on cardiovascular training. I'd work both on endurance and speed. I'd try and get yourself to the the point where you're able to run a few miles in under 25 minutes. As for resistance training, I'd begin with push ups and pullups. Even if you can't do a pullup don't worry, when you fix your diet and lose woieght from running you should be able to pull your bodyweight.

I don't know that I'd say I have responsed to it any certain way. I went from using another Omega product and switched to Omega and it's a hell of a lot more convenient but I don't know that I'd say I felt a difference. But years ago when I first started supplementing with omegas I remember seeing a positive change in my mood, appeitite, skin and overall sense of well being. Definitely a worthwhile product. It's got everything you need all in one pak.

It's tough to say what it's going to take for you. There's no way to know. Depends on your metabolism, what you're currently eating, how you train your genetics among other things. You just need to keep training and eating. If you're not gaining enough size eat more. If your training is 100% then it comes down to diet and your genetics. Keep in mind, 30 lbs of muscle is a serious goal and it will take time.

Fluke, flounder and sole are great choices. Cod is great if it's really fresh but being in Utah I don't know how many options you have. Then again, there must be some great fresh water lean fish that I'm unaware of. I'd look into fresh water fish if I were you.

Thanks, man!

The best things you can do to control cortisol is get plenty of rest, eat a balanced diet and keep stress at a minimum. To try and "control" it with a supplement would be very hard and even done with pharmaceuticals, it is VERY dangerous and not something you want to do. Leading a balanced lifestyle is without a doubt the best thing you can do. Oh, and EFAs are key!

Evan congrats brotha on everything youve accomplished this year. your poise is impressive you are so thankful for everything especially family and friends, good family and friends are are the utmost important thing in life. and i love the way you think bro, anything "better" than yesterday is a success. striations, definition, looking bigger and leaner etc...You are an inspiration to everyone. not just people in the sport either. keep up the good work pimpin!

Amen to that and thank you! If you approach thingd with the attitude that progress is everything and being better every day is all that matters, before you know it you will find yourself places you never expected to be.

EFAs also help with cortisol? Didn't know that! Damn! Thanks, Evan!

Omega 3s have effects on insulin and how you handle carbohydrates...that influences your cortisol! And omega 6s (GLA) have a positive ffect on prostaglandin synthesis which can improve mood (so can Omega 3s) and if your metal stae is better then it stands to reason you will deal with stress in a more positive way that has eveyrthing to do with cortisol. Basically, Omegas have a postive effect on EVERYTHING!

I knew before you did the Flex Pro that you would win but I wanted to congratulate you anyways! And I think you looked amazing at the arnold. Fourth at your first Arnold Class is quite an accomplishment. I also have a strange question to keep your intellect on its toes. I trust your opinion because quite frankly I believe you're the smartest bodybuilder that I know of (I know a lot, so don't take that lightly). Alright, so seeing as how we bodybuilders drink so much water and some of us have shakes before bed, it makes you have to pee in the middle of the night. However, I sleep very well and almost NEVER wake up to expel the urine in the middle of the night. When I wake up, my stomach is so freaking huge from all the pee that I'm afraid it will distend my midsection overtime. But some people also say that holding your pee makes your abs stronger. What is your take Ox? Do you have this problem? Should I be concerned? I should also mention I don't drink much water past 9pm so its not like I'm downing a lot before bed. Sorry for the long post and thanks for your time brother.

Thanks man I appreciate it. Splitting bodyparts is tough...I've done it before and it takes a lot out of me. My first instict is to say to avoid it and try and get it in all in one session. But then again, the only way to know is to try it and see how you look and feel.

I first started out with a weight set in my basement and that forced me to be as creative as possible with a barbell and dumbells. It seemed like a pain in the ass at the time but it was really the best thing that could have ever happened because it forced me to learn more and to really focus on my mind muscle connection. I'd reccomend that any begginer focus on and master the basics. My rep range varied just as it does today....it went from as low as 4 reps and as high as 20. The best advice I could give you would be to MASTER the squat, deadlift, bench press and military press. You don't even need to concern yourself with any other exercises until you master these.

I would rather see you eat tuna. Just because you're poor doesn't mean you have to poison your body! Chicken is cheap enough and if you shop around and pay attention to sales, you can score meat at decent prices too. Either way, I think a good EFA supp is a smart purchase.

I just had a discussion in my lab diagnosis class about how bad tilapia is and the importance of choosing good quality protein and food sources...spend a little more on quality food and benefit not just in bodybuilding but also with your health it will end up costing you less in the longrun bc ur health care costs will be lower ...just thought I'd add that

Hey OX! I'm glad to hear everything is going well. You were looking sick at the Arnold. I got a few quick questions if you don't mind answering em. I'm really trying to increase my arm mass. What do you think are the best mass builders for bis, tris, and forearms? My current workout routine is kinda like this bis: straight bar curls, preachers, hammer curls, cables (1-2 very light sets for warm up only), and I'll throw in seated or lying dumbbell curls and drop set them with super light weight to hit absolute failure. Triceps: weighted dips, skull crushers, cable press downs super set with reverse grip press downs and over head (single arm) dumbbell extensions til failure. Forearms: (behind the back) barbell wrist curls 185-225lbs (depending on how burnt they are) inside wrist curls with dumbbells super set with regular wrist curls (infront) till failure. How does this look mass busing wise, any tips on getting straight bar curl weight up? I really want to hit a plate a side. I'm currently at 120lbs 1 rep max. Also, my current split is:

Mon: back/bis/forearms
Tues: chest/tris/delts
Wed: legs/abs
Thurs:back/bis/forearms
Fri: chest/tris/delts

Would it be better to hit a muscle once a week? Or am I overtraining? Why do you think hitting one muscle a week is better strength/mass wise rather than hitting it twice a weeks? Thanks for any help bro. Anythings appreciated. It's an honor just to talk to you. Sorry for the shitload of questions, I've never had the opportunity to even meet a pro so I'd like some insight.

Thanks,

J

Hi OX,
I was trying find a solution for my girl's problem at the Forum and they directed me here and I was told that you're a scientist when it comes to this lol.
So my girlfriend is trying to look shredded. She is around 5'6 130 lbs.. She hits the gym everyday and does cardio like crazy! Like she does cardio in the morning for an hour and then afternoon she lifts but everything is superset so its like cardio-lift.. She doesnt eat any junk food at all, drinks her protein shake and at almost 2 gallons of water a day. However, she CANNOT get ripped. No definition whatsoever! She has mass tho. Shes not skinny. She is muscular for a girl.
But here is the catch, she is a strict vegan. She doesnt eat meat at all! The only thing she eats is vegetables and egg white and no tofu because shes allergic. SHe also cannot take pills because of gelatin. I told her that eating all those carbs (vegetables) and drinking almost 2 gallons of water is the main reason that her body retains water. I told her that bodybuildiers for example, almost never eat vegetables because theres nothing else but carbs in it ( I may be wrong).
I am pretty sure she doesnt have any fat on her but a lot a water weight and underskin water.

What can we do?

Thanks. As for your training, there are no excerises that you aren't already doing that I'd suggest. Just be sure you train to failure and use enough intensity. It helps to have a training partner to force reps but the good thing about arms training is a little momentum/cheating on the final reps can help you achieve the same.

As for your split, I think you train your arms too much. Don't forget, by training chest and back heavy and hard, you will use a lot of bis and tris. Heavy pressing on chest and delts are key for tricep development and heavy back training has a lot to do with bicep growth. Surpirisingly, so does heavy leg training so why the hell are you only training legs once a week and everything else twice?! Dedicate equal attention to each bodypart and in my opinion, once a week is enough. If you train hard and heavy enough, you should be ABLE to train the same bodypart twice a week!

What can we do?

First of all, the more water you drink, the less you hold. Unless she has a medical condition, she should not be holding that much fluid. More than likely, you are mistaking bodfyfat for fluid. So why is she not shredded? She's probably overtrained from all the cardio, training, and lack of protein. Her metabolism is probably shot. And if she IS in fact that overtrained, she could be suffering from adrenal fatigue and that WILL make you retain extra fluid. But I doubt she is THAT overtrained.

If I were to make some suggestions I'd say figure out a way to increase her protein intake (And stop with all the damn shakes...eat some real food...shakes do ZERO for your metabolsim). I'd scale the cardio back a bit. I'd put more emphasis on weight training and stop with all the circuits etc. Do high rep deads, squats etc etc...this will help burn fat and retain muscle and keep her metabolism up.

I don't know her personally and I'm only going by what you say so I don't know what exactly is stopping her from achieving her goal. These are just suggestions based on the info I have.

If she's drinking 2 gallons of water a day (which I agree is too much) I definitely would NOT suggest watching your sodium intake! Drinking that much water you're already at risk of depleting your electrolytes...if anything, you would have to be sure to include ENOUGH sodium.

When you say sea bass I assume you mean Chilean Sea Bass (which really is nothing like American sea bass). It's high in fat and pretty tasty. If you're looking for a fatty fish, it fits the bill. If you mean the American stuff there are all different varieties...black sea bass, striped bass etc etc...they're all different.

Hey Evan, whats your take on training frequency? Im still debating on if i should go 5 days on 2 off or something like training every other day so i recover fully from each and every workout....i am very prone to overtraining aswell, i noticed the harder i train, heavy i went i could never sleep on that night? I was thinking of doing upperbody one day, take a rest, then lower, rest, upper, and repeat. Ive already built my squats around 700, deadlifts 600+, presses 500+, but my shape and mass is really lacking, so obviously i put the ego down and trained with much lighter weight, and seems to feel good but my ego is zapped, i dont even feel like training anymore? I just got back from a month of rest, my diet and "supplementation" is now on point, i just started yesterday, maybe i should just wait a little till my drive, motivation, intensity, mindset kicks in?

Sorry this is sorta a long complaint hahah, but whats your take on that? Oh and tell Robbie to go up to new haven and get some hardcore training vids for us!

Thanks bro!

My wife and I got to eat breakfast with ya the Sunday morning after you competed at the Arnold (she was the one covered in paint from being in Art At The Arnold lol) and I have to tell ya, you astonished her. She never realized how down to earth you are. Anyways, one proud papa to another I just have to say congrats to you and your girl. Nothing like holding your baby for the first time....

I'll take a look when I swing in there Friday and see what kind they have. When I called they just said "Sea Bass". I'm assuming it's the American Bass, since Indiana is nowhere near any major oceans haha. Thanks for getting back brotha!

It's down to paint and refinishing the floors!

We do have weekly farmers markets. There are also local farms...they're great for the eggs and produce. I've gotten chickens from there before and they are great but they're small and expensive! Haven't tried beef from the farm yet but I plan to.

This is why I love Ox. A green freak like myself appreciates the thought he takes into where he get his food from. I have pretty much stopped eating chicken. I get a pretty sweet deal on beef from a local farm and the rest of my protein comes from salmon and cod.

I love them man, I also have markets around and I'm pretty sure there is farms but I just need to snoop around a bit.. They are they bomb, free range eggs, beef thats comes from a cow that eats what it should be eating and TONNES of fresh fruit and veggies.. It's like a bodybuilders dream come true, every weekend.
I agree on how you say squats grow your arms, shit is weird like that - I get pumps in my arms from doing squats, and the next day my whole body is just shot. My thought is possibly from gripping the bar (Maybe?) but it don't see how I would get a pump like that and my other guess is that it's just natural since squatting releases so many hormones.. What do you think?

I salute you for being able to eat that much salmon, as much as I love it I don't think I'd be able to eat salmon a lot it's just too rich.

Hey Ox,

I've been on a keto diet for 13weeks now..things are going pretty good..I still have 3 weeks left..and I lost 30pounds (including water/glycogen)...My question is.. how should I incorporate carbs back... I'm at 300g of protein and 130g of fat right now and I want to add around 300g of carbs and decrease fat a little. My plan is to start by incorporating them with torrent post-workout and a Cup of oat with breakfast..for the first day...and work from there and go up to 200g in a week and 300g at the end of the second week....

My question is..should a go slower or faster ?..or by feel ?

and Btw...I was able to do that diet because of all the knowledge that I took in that thread...I started with a solid plan and adjust cardio/diet with time and I was able to keep all my strenght and intensity up while loosing fat...and I was very surprise to see my muscle fullness come back after 3-4weeks on that diet...Gotta say that nitro/omegas in good quantities helped a lot..but still..I didn't thought it would come back like this (Glad I trusted your advices )...anyway I just wanted to thank you...and have your opinion/experience on how to incorporate carbs

sorry for the not so good english =)

Evan, what is your take on front squats? In the leg training vids I've seen on MD, you're just crushing traditional squats, hack squats, shit like that. But what about fronts? Do you do them in your leg routine every so often or do you do them at all? Thanks brotha!

Thanks bro!

Training frequency all depends on how well you recuperate. But recuperation itself depends on the amount of rest you get, if your nutritonal needs are being met, hormone levels, age, genetics etc etc. How often you train is highly individual. I would suggest two things: 1. Train less often. I would train 3-4 days a week and include a day of rest between workouts on average. 2. Pre-Exhaust. Begin your workouts using more isolated movements with moderate to heavy weight. Even though you are going heavy, the movements are not compund movements and will not drain your nervous system. Once you are pre-exhausted, move on to your heavy compound movements...even though you're trianing as heavy as possible, the amount of weight you are able to use will be significantly drecreased and the load on your nervous system should be less. Plus, you'll get more out of your compound movements by doing isolations first...you'll have a better mind muscle connection.

I've decided to sit it out this year. With the baby on the way in July and the fact that I've spent all my time since the Arnold working on the house to make sure it's ready in time for the baby, this year it's going to be tough. I think that the best thing to do is to do the Arnold again next year.

Good decision, your only 29 with an olympian physique. A little more off season means more mass and ultimately the Mr. Olympia title. Congrats on the baby, saw your interview that day and yes the way you treat people is what truly matters. Thanks for being an inspiration for young bucks like me.

Oh i see, ive been using half a serving on training days and it feels great, i have no crash and doesnt affect my sleep, and no erectyle disfunction like the other pre workout drinks have haha.

And thanks for answering my other question about training frequency, right now im listning to my body, i keep my workouts to 20 mins by doing a bunch of supersets, low rest time, like 8 sets for 8 reps and 20 sec rest periods, im still able to train heavy when doing that and loving it!

Oh yeah Evan how much BCAA's do you think its neccessary in the offseason and precontest? Obviously depends on diet and the person, but if you had to throw a number out there how much would it be? Oh and you do your cardio right after you work out right? I know some bodybuilders know train on a empty stomach to elict more of a growth hormone release to burn off fat and keep their muscle, have you ever tried that?

sorry for all the questions haha

I have a dilema, i work as a chef and between the hours of 10am-3pm and 6pm -10pm i cant eat any whole food what should i do? so far i have tried pasterized egg whites with milk and a protien powder and oats, is there anything i could have that would get the metabiolism going?

Evan, I'm sure you've gotten this question before, but why all the fuss over BCAA's? Since they're 3 of the 9 EAA's, I just use EAA Nitro and have seen great results using this in conjunction with Animal Nitro PWO. A lot of the guys I train alongside are all over BCAA's, but to me it makes more sense to stick with EAA's. I just wanted your opinion on using which you feel is better and why. Thanks brotha!
